gun questions

i am looking at buying a ruger 357 single action blackhawk does anyone have one and do you like the way it shoots also would like to know what you would recomend for a rifle to hunt deer and hogs would
be hunting at around 200 yards max thanks

Ruger single actions -357,.44- good utility pistols. Brother has .357 for varmint control- raccoons- and uses shotshells for rats in chicken house. Deer rifle and hogs? 200 yards? Where hunting- brush or open fields like Wisconsin? Marlin 336 in .35 Remington perhaps. 30-30 has collected lot of deer also. Do you have experience with other rifles- Military training? Cheap Russian surplus M44s 7.62 Russian have enough power to handle hogs and deer at your specified range- may kick and blast a bit. Surplus No. 4 Enfields and 8mm Mausers also good utility choice- I used 8mm on deer. SKS used by a lot of hunters - 7.62x39 short Russian cartridge about like 30-30 at 200 yards. 6mm rifles on up to .375 mag could be used- depends on how much recoil and money you can handle for the hunting. I have and have had several black hawks and loved them. I went and bought a Super red hawk and it's not as accurate as the single action gun.

You will get all kinds of theorys on what is the best deer gun.

I hunt farm land in Michigan so we get some good long shots as well as in close. I have hunted with a 308 , 270 , 30-06 , 300 win mag, and my fav Remington 7mm mag.

People "wine" that it's to much gun ! Well there a bunch of women. Load according to the game and it's perfect.

Deer , elk , pig the perfect all around gun, i even hunted in the Mountains of Virgina . Down there i had some real long shooting and it is a wonderful fire arm.
I took it over to Mag-na port to have a muzzel brake installed , does't kick at all now.

I have a bad shoulder so low impact is important.

I still have all the other guns , but don't use them for hunting anymore.

get a .243 Win, 25-06, or .270 Win for deer out to 200 yards.

I don't own one but have shot a few and I think you will reallylike that Ruger Blackhawk, been kinda lookin for one myself actually.

Gotta get your guns while we still can in this country!

The pistol part someone else will have to help you on, I have a Ruger 9MM semiauto but no rev olvers. For 200 yds and under I would go for a medium size round such as a 6MM-.243 or similar balistics cartridge. Those sizes are well suited for whitetail but as always , shot placement is vital to stopping any game animal. If you intend to use the meat stay away from the larger calibers as they destroy much meat. I will get a lot of flack on this one but although the 30-06 is immensly popular in my opinion it is a bit large for deer. In my hunting career most of my deer were downed with a .257 Roberts, most on the spot, very little chase, lets hear from others, every one has differing experiences and all viewpoints are valid as there are many differing circumstances and terrain to consider. mEl

I have a Ruger New model Blackhawk .44 mag. It is the most accurate hand gun I have ever owned. I bought it in 1973. I hand load all of my ammo, weigh each load. Quarter size group at 25 yards. Some folks say reloading is cheap, don't know. All I want is acuracy. For deer I use a 30-30 Winchester also bought in '73. I have a 30-06 but the four wheeler ride gets the scope off. My .02 Rick in Texas

Ammo will always be cheap and available in the military calibers. .22, .223 , .308 ,30/06,9mm, maybe 38/357,40s&w & 12 gauge.

I have the Ruger .357, have had it since about 1979. I handload and make my own bullets out of wheel weights and 50/50 solder. I have killed numerous deer with the handgun. Best all around hunting revolver I can think of.

I was going to suggest the 30/30 or .35 remington for deer and hogs, but when you said 200 yards, I think I would switch to the .270. The .270 is a necked down .30-06. It is an old classic, but ammo is available, and it flat out does the job.

Deer gun its had to beat the good old 30-30 but 200 yards is a tad far for one of them there good to about 150 yards. My self I use an SKS, fast shotting and they do a good job with out the bad kick you get with many of the others. To me any thing less then a 30 cal. is to small to do a real good job on deer unless you have a good shoot. Ya 243, 270 etc. do kill a lot but lack knock down just a tad over the 30 cals.

The Rugeer is excelent shooting, I have the .44 mag, you'll love it.
For the Deer..30-06, no doubt about it.

Cannot comment on the handgun, but without a doubt, something like these late model Savage heavy barrel tactical, or target grade rifles with good optics, very easy to shoot coins at 100 yds +, you'll like one with this kind of accuracy.

Lot of calibers and arrangements to consider, for what you mention, one of these would be a good match, with a lot of re-load and or ammunition options to select from.

The Blackhawks feel nice and shoot OK. But they are single action revolvers. I think the Redhawk and the S&W revolvers are a better choice, and probably a whole lot safer to carry. But to each their own.

The "New Model" Blackhawks have a transfer bar and are as safe as any handgun made. The concerns about safety with single actions comes from MUCH older technology when you had to carry an SA with the hammer down on an empty chamber as a sharp blow to the hammer could cause a discharge. No longer possible.

The only advantage to DAs is faster loading and the marginally simpler action: Just point it and pull the trigger.

A Blackhawk is the best bang for the buck (you should pardon the pun) out there. You cannot buy a stronger or more inherently accurate gun for the same money.

The .38/.357 is a very versatile caliber. Light .38SPL is very comfortable and relatively inexpensive to shoot which encourages practice which is critical to competence; upper-limit .357 is good for a lot of game. I personally think it's not a good idea for deer unless you're an experienced shooter and can be very sure of shot placement, but a lot of people have taken deer with that round.

I have a couple of S&W DA Revolvers and I love them too, but I paid significantly more money for them as well. Nearly double in some cases.

better shoot a 357 before you buy, they have a nasty crack to them, hard on the ears, .44 mag is better choice, with a 10 inch barrel easy to handle,.25/06 is same way, hard on the ears, good shooters though if you can stand the muzzle blast,...308 or 06 is good choice you can find shells for 06 anywhere....

Derned painkillers, ( had tooth extracted yesterday) meant to suggest a .308 in one of those Savage Arms heavy barrel rifles, the tactical model I've fired, is no stranger to tackdriving at 100 yds., I believe200 is about O for that caliber, it's either that or just under 300, wojuld have to look it up again, so it should be real easy to dial in at the range you mention.

single action pistol is the safest to carry. i hear the ruger .357 is a very popular gun, well balanced and fun to shoot, easy to maintain and reasonable in cost. check out local gun shows and probably find lots of them at good prices.

I have a super blackhawk in .44 with the 7.5" barrel. Without a scope, I can shoot about a 1.5" group at 50 yards with factory loads. I put a Millet red dot on it last week but have not shot it yet. They are a great, accurate and reliable gun.

For the price the Blackhawk is a great single action.

For a deer and hog rifle up to 200 yards its hard to beat a 30-06. If you want to go cheap right now the best "cheap" gun on the market is the Mossberg ATR - $250 or so. My BIL and a couple nephews have bought them - they are accurate (enough for their skills) and dependable. If you want to go expensive there's plenty of others out there that will fill the bill.

If you were keeping it at 100 yards I would have said a 30-30.

Owned a NM Blackhawk in 45 Colt for a few years. OK guns but they need some work to get to their full potential. Throats, forcing cones, belt pins and barrel finish come to mind. I did a lot of gunsmithing to make my BH perform like a champ.

If I was going 357 to use as a hunting sidearm... S&W 686 6"... Have one, love it, have put a couple of deer down for the count with it.

I carry a Ruger DA SP100 357 concealed and it's really a nice weapon. It too has the transfer bar safety.

I've also had a Blackhawk 3-screw 357 that I really liked.

When I was on the Ruger websight looking up the SP100 spec's, they had a ad for converting any old 3 screw to the new safety bar design for free, other than shipping.

My field carry is a Colt DA 44mag revolver with a 8" barrel. My son and I snatched up a pair just before they quit making them. Wow, what a shooter.

For upto 200yrds, it's hard to beat a Win M94 30/30 or 32spl for just about any game.
