Allis Chalmers WD-45, WD

the wd was made 1948 to 1953 wd 45 was made 1953 to 1957 the 45 has more horsepower about 45 hp the wd was about 37 hp. I own 1 of each nice little tractors

The WD has a large cover plate that bolts onto the right hand side of the motor and all but the very late model WDs have a straight shifter. WD45 does not have the cover plate on the motor and the shifter is curved. Motors are easily interchangable between the WC, WD and WD45 though.

Biggest difference was in the engines. WD used a 201 cubic inch, WD45 had a longer throw crank and 226 inch with Power-Crater pistons. (Concave top). HP bumped up to about 43. Tall head (4 inch) instead of the 3 inch WC, WD head. Also had Snap-Coupler hitch instead of the pin hitch. WD engine had a bolted on plate on the right side of the engine, 45 was solid there. 45 had the Traction Booster gauge to indicate weight transfer on mounted implements- WD had the system, but no gauge. Standard and optional tires were on wider rims. 11/12 inch on WD vs 12/13 inch on WD45. All 28 inch diameter.

JMS;
That is not really true, we had a 50 WD had the traction boost and theguage, I think most or alot of the WD got retroed for the traction boost and snap coupler after it came out.

There are a lot of differing opinions on this. Here is what I have found and observed. All but the last WDs had the straight shift handle. The transmission had some major internal changes at the same point when the curved shifter came along also.

The side plate on the engine is also accurate in that the original WD engine had one and the WD45's didn't. However alot of those engines have been changed out over the years. I will add that D17 and E gleaner engines are pretty much a drop in also.

I will argue with the snapcoupler statement in that those have been added also and it was a option on the WD45 (I have one without).

Won't argue about the traction booster guage as I don't know that one myself. However I beleive that they all had the traction booster just not sure as to the guage.

The only sure way I could tell you as to how to check would be the serial number. It is stamped on the back of the left rear brake housing. Alot of times it is somewhat faint. If the serial number is on the center of the rearend pumpkin housing you have a WC. Just check the number against the serial numbers list in Research and Info over to the left. I will try to inclde it also.

Don't know the difference between the two, but here's a pic of a WD45 bought new in 1954 by the original owner. His daughter had it painted as a surprise for him last Christmas. Hal
