I have a John Deere A and was wondering what method would give me more horsepower. Right now I have standard bore cast flattop pistons with the hollingsworth compression rings. I also have an extra set of .045 over aluminum high compression pistons. Which would work better?

Chris, my guess is that the higher compression pistons would probably work better due to the fact that taking out the compression inserts would unshroud the valves. Just a hunch on my part. Mike

I'm in the process of putting back together, but before I went any further I thought I would ask. I'm not really sure on the compression ratio yet. Thanks Chris

IMO higher compression wont give more HP, same fuel and less air[cause cylinder volume is smaller] causes less bang.
lower the compr ratio from lets say 20:1 to 18:1,then there is room for more fuel and air,so bigger bang.[HP] adding a turbo and cranking up the IP would needed to take advantage of the modification. But then there is more cooling needed too.

my 2c worth

How do I go about cranking up the injection pump on my A? And what type of turbo would you recommend I put on it? I am looking for as much power as possible...

I agree with Mike. Get rid of the inserts. They will be shrouding the valves and restricting airflow.
Won"t hurt to re-balance the engine. Most of those aluminum pistons are lighter than the original cast pistons.

If the stroke didn't change then the same air mount would be obtained no matter if using the high compression or lower compression pistons. The density would be higher with the high compression pistons giving it more bang and the lighter pistons would give it more zip. Definitely I would use the aluminum high compression pistons. Wouldn't be stock anymore though.

explain that to me,if you don't alter the stroke, and you put a piston in that has less combustion chamber to get higher compression so it creates less cyl volume, how in the world can you get the same amount of air in the cyl?? Unless you put a turbo on to pressurise the air.

i dont know on both questions, i ain't familiar with your tractor , for both the IP adjustment and the turbo you should talk to a IP and Turbo repair shop. it all depends on the displacement, compr ratio and how much HP can safely be added.
without blowing the thing to the scrapheap.
