O/T: Computer problem

I had a pretty bad malware/spyware and trojan infection on the other pc. Almost 400 infected files. Got it running fairly well now, but when looking in My Computer, drive C: is not there.

And, on the Start Menu, I don't have "All Programs".

It's an HP 2.8 Ghz, XP sp2. I can use it as is, but would prefer to fix. Opinions and suggestions are welcome

Thanks,
Anthony

Easiest fix is to format that hard drive and reload the operating system, then reinstall your application programs. Run a complete virus scan, adware remover, and Norton Systemworks before reloading any data. If you have some data you want to save, burn that onto a CD and scan that CD with a properly protected computer before reloading it.

clean up what files you can, save to a disk or chip, then wipe out your whole system, reboot with new windows.

If it is a late model HP try this.
old bc
1. Backup files from the My Documents folder and from other folders you may have created.
2. Disconnect all connected devices (such as the Personal Media Drive, USB drives, printer, and fax), remove media from drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware. Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Just after the first screen appears (the logo screen), press the F10 key repeatedly until a recovery menu appears.

5. Select one of the following procedures, depending on which recovery type you want to perform:
o To perform a standard system recovery, click Next , and then click Yes .
o To perform a destructive recovery, click Advanced , (select Destructive Recovery ) and then click Next .

Sounds like your using the two column XP start menu. You can try switching to the Classic menu.

Right click the task bar and choose properties. Click the start menu tab and dot Classic Start Menu.

If this works and it should. You can try switching it back to the XP menu.

Maybe All Programs will come back this way.

Dont give up and reinstall just yet.

First, try going to Start, then Run, and enter "C:" and hit enter. Does that get you to your drive C? If so, you can just download TweakUI. Odds are your malware marked it 'hidden'. You an re-enable it by finding the right tab in TweakUI (I haven't done it in a while) and then put the check mark back in the box. Apply and exit tweakui and you usually don't even have to reboot.

Now if "C:" on the run line returns something about it being disabled by your administrator, then we need to talk about policies and security. While I'm on the topic, can you run "taskman" and "regedit" from your Run box?

No, I can't run Task Manager. I get the error "has been disabled by your administrator". Didn't try Reg Edit or C; I'm not home with that pc, so I'll have to try it later. However, I suspect that it will generate the same error message.

Thanks,
Anthony
