Wire Corn Crib

Need to move a wire corn crib about three miles. The crib is 12 foot dia. and 15 foot tall with a 6 foot tall galvinized roof. We plan on taking the roof off. Now is the hard part the wire sides are bolted together at each horizontal wire. We moved one upright before but no power or telephone lines in the way. This time we have quite a few to contend with. One thought is to bolt 2 X 6 across the dia. and split in half and lay the flat side down on a trailer. Any other ideas?

Hi call me and i will tell you how to deal with the power wires, and you want have to break the crib down.205-242-7707.

The crib is 12' diameter. If you lay it down, it will them be 12' wide and 12' high plus the height of the trailer. I'm guessing total height will be 16' or less.

My brother and I just moved one over 22 miles away a few weeks ago. That particular crib had same dia as yours, had 12' sides that separated into 6' rings.Basically split in half. The bottom ring and the upper ring with roof.

Another one we moved earlier had 3 rings of 4' ea.Moved upper 2 rings with roof in one trip. This is the one in picture.

Easy to split if yours comes apart like that.

The sides are wire panels 4 foot wide by 15 feet tall. We thought about cutting 3 feet off the top, but once on the road we'd be finished if more had to come off, Not to mention the loss in volume. My thought was to part in two along the height so we could lay it on the flat like a quonset hut or hoop house.

Try to avoid disassembly at all costs. They were hard enough to assemble new, darn near impossible rusty and bent.

Unless the road you need to haul down is busy and or narrow, you should be able to move it intact.

About 10 years ago I helped my neighbor move a giant rectangular one. He used a semi with a flatbed and we ended up having to tip it on its side so it lay something like 15 ft wide. He had to haul about 10 miles, but it was a low traffic county highway. I just ended up driving ahead, stopping all cars then telling drivers to pull over or they were going to get run off the road by a huge arse corn crib. I had a hard time getting the 2 drivers who I didn't now to pull over for me. I think they thought I was trying to rob them or something :)
