What is the best tractor to bush hog 2 acres for $3000 to $5000. I currently have a Workmaster 601 but it needs a lot of work and I am going to turn some of the bush hogging over to my son and maybe grandsons in the future and I want to have some thing as safe as possible.

For what you're wanting to do, it'll be tough to beat a 135 or 150 Massey Ferguson or a 3000 Ford in that price range.

Live power, 3-point, can be had w/ power steering, decent brakes, lower profile, easy on fuel, parts available, simple to maintain, ect

I bush hog three acres weekly with a 31 year old Kubota L245 without any trouble. I use 6 to 8 gallons of diesel per year. I have a ford 3600, 8n, and several offset Farmalls but the Kubota is excellent and one can be bought in the $3000 to $5000 range.

Darn near anything would be good. For that budget, you can get a pretty decent machine. I've always loved a nice old Massey 135 with the perkins diesel.

"needs alot of work" just described any other tractor you find for $3000-$5000 to replace it !
May as well fix what you have ?

First off, what kinda grass is it, and why are we mowing it?

If it is in front of your house and a yard, then I understand. If it's out back and an undesireable grass, like fescue, then spray it with roundup and kill it. Have someone with a no till drill convert it to native grass (depending on where you live), then let it grow and enjoy the wildlife.

No mowing required!! How's that for an alternative idea.

The Ford 601 series tractors are good machines. Shoot for what your wanting to spend it could be rebuilt and then you have what you need and haven't spent any more then what you want to spend. Depending on the model 601 you have some are better then the others but either way a 601 is a good old tractor. Now if you feel you just need think you need to get another tractor I would say another Ford maybe a 661 or 861 which have live PTO. Oh by the way 90% of safety on tractors isn't the machine its the person driving the machine

Spend a few of those bucks you have ear marked for another tractor on your 601. It's one of the best out there for what you have in mind.

Thanks for you input folks, to answer a couple of your questions:

I use the 601 at my hunting camp in Wayland NY cutting verious grasses and clover. Rebuilding the 601 is not a bad idea and one I will give some serious thought to. However, I would like to sit lower so I can get under some trees on trails I cut, and it may be safer along a drainage ditch by the road. I value your opinions, I have had the camp for 15 years and 69 years old but still have a lot to learn about tractors and the good life in the country.

My opinion, for 2 acres rent a skidloader with an enclosed cab and brush mower on it. Maybe $250 for a day. No maintenance and safer than a little tractor and brush mower.

Don: Here again, I think you have the best of all worlds with your 641. (assuming you have correctly identified it as a 641 and not a 741) I would be hard pressed to think of a tractor that would sit any lower and still be as suitable for you. That is, if it has standard tires and seat.

I'll toss an amen on this one.
