The first two are from saturday morning raking up some wheat straw so we could bale it late in the afternoon when we finshed up that field of oats. A 1955 JD 60 and a 1948 M.

The first two are pictures I took a while back while driving down the road on a tractor. It belongs to the local CPS plant and looks pretty new. The other two pictures are of my JD 600 sprayer. Things sure have changed. The model 600 Hi Cycle was Deere's first self propelled sprayer.

Bill,

I'm still curious...what part of Illinois are you in? I saw a lot of wheat while traveling up I-24 and I-57 a while back.

The new GPSs tuff is just amazing in its accuracy. I had the local co-op spray my acres of beans. I timed him. From the time he turned on the nozzles until he finished was 4minutes & 38 seconds. 90 foot pattern. Sure do enjoy the pics.

I have a question on the straw raking pictures. It looks like the grain was cut pretty high off the the ground wouldnt there be more straw to bale if the grain was combined closer to the ground.Just wondering why you wouldnt try to maximize both your cash crops.

Just a thought about that... in order to prevent soil erosion and also to keep enough organic material in the soil you need to keep some straw on the ground.

If you take too much from the land it won't give anything back.

We spent a night at the RV park in Carlock last month (June 15, I think).

51 years ago, I spent a few months working on a farm east of Altona. First time really away from home, but had a good time. I got room and board and laundry and $125.00 a month, to spend as I wanted. What a life, really..hard, long days, a warm shower, a good supper, and I was ready to hit the big lights of Galva for the evening. There was a real cute carhop at the A & W, but I suppose she's 65+ by now and has aged a bit.

Sure glad I haven't...LOL!

Atkinson and Annawan were hoppin' towns in those days, but I was too young to hit the bars.

Best regards,

Stan

Here in central IL, straw isnt a big cash crop. We harvested 40 acres where this straw came from and for part of it we put the spreader belt on and spread it because it just isnt needed. So there really wasnt any reason to run all of that straw in the combines. Did make it a little hard to rake being cut that high.

We baled a couple hundred bales off of that field yesterday afternoon and the farmer that the wheat belonged to was going to bale four or five rack loads and then roll up a few bales and the rest will stay on the field.

Bill, Thanks for all the great pictures. Keeps me in touch with my roots! Grew up in Cambridge, IL and married a gal (39 years ago!)from Geneseo whose family was originally from Atkinson. Can't do any better than those Belgian girls! Have been in the South for better part of 38 years and don't miss the winters. We have a small farm in upstate of SC and do some grass hay and raise some Coopworth Sheep, but nothing on the scale of those Ill farms. Keep the pics coming! Thanks!
