What is this? (pics)

They are mounted on my Farmall 400. I am relatively positive that they were hooked to a loader. A pair on the left and right a little in front of the hyd tank.

The color kind of makes me think they were on a minnie moline....

I have no idea how to use them. I am also wondering if my hydraulic problems (see posts on inability to lift round bales of hay and posts concerning having good pressure in the rear quick disconnects) are due to a bad cylinder.. see the photo with the dirt and fluid on it.

Also notice the color of the fluid in the quick disconnect fitting.

They are remote hydraulic hookups. Back in '64, I worked for a neighbor with a 400 with mounted row-crop cultivator- had three valves on the tractor, to control left, right and rear units. Handy to use when one side or the other plugged with weeds. Paint color is no connection to MM.

Looks like Aeroquip type quick disconnects. We had hyd outlets on both sides of our 400. Both were used for front cultivator halves when it was mounted. The rest of the time, the right side hyd was used for forward fast hitch cylinder. Our couplers weren´t like yours. Looks like someone rigged that up.

I only have 2 control levers. The one controls that main hydraulic cylinder in the picture and the other controls the rear remote. I don't know how to connect to the side remotes. Do I unscrew the caps or are they caps? I am needing to get this system troubleshooted. Not lifting a bale is a major problem for me.

Have you used a pressure gauage on your hyd. system yet? Those threaded fittings are aero-quip fittings and were orginal equipment minus some tees, pipes, and other pipe fittings on the 300's and 400's.I did not see any quick coupling pictures. If you don't have a pressure gauage you can go to TSC or Farm & Fleet and get a 2000+PSI. gauage, some fittings, and a piece of hose and make your own gauage. Until you know your pressure you have no idea of where the problems might be. Also in your owners manual and parts book should be pictures of how the hyd. fittings look on each side and on the rear of your tractor minus all the extra pipe that your pictures show. Get back to original and start from there with your trouble shooting. Armand

Also remember that hydraulic function is a matter of both flow and pressure. Pressure gauge by itself will not diagnose a pump's problems. You need access to a unit that measures both. Also, you may have a good pump but bad valves. Many people switch pumps and find out that the real fix is a cheaper valve.

My initial reaction was to replace the pump but with the pressure where the shop manual specifies I am pointing toward a relif valve or maybe bad cylinder/ram.

Can anyone tell me how to/what to hook up those aeroquip fittings? I have been searching the net but can only find dealers and not items like the one's in the picture. Are mine male or female? Are the part in the picture a cap or the actual fitting? Are they under pressure removable or not?

Those are the male fittings without caps. The other fitting screws on to them, depressing the center valve. Since you said you only have two spool remotes, the Aeroquip fittings must be plumbed together with your rear remote disconnects or the fast hitch cylinder. Why do you want to use the forward remotes?

I really don't have a 'right now' use but I hate not being able to use what I have. I am thinking of getting a loader. A Duall 325. So I am not sure whether I can use it.

The couplers you describe are hydraulic couplers and on the 400 we had there were 3 levers for hydraulic with another set of the couplers going to the rear of the tractor. From what it appears, someone has added a fast hitch and plumbed it off the right side and use the center lever(if it has 3) or what would be the outside if you only have 2. If it were me and I needed a loader fast and could get by without the hitch going up and down, I would put couplers to the F.H. raise the hitch and uncouple it and see if it stays up(you could also insert a valve to turn off and on) You then can put compatable couplers on both sides for your loader. We used the left side for the loader rams(inside lever), the right side for the hydraulic bucket(middle lever or outside if you have 2) If your tractor does have a third lever most add on hitch's in our area were plumbed into the rear hyd. when using a loader. The 400's I were around did not have power steering and you may have some add on plumbing if steering has been added. Shouldn't take you long to get it converted. Good Luck Gary
