O/T HELP! Another RAID Question?

Sorry, sorry, sorry for the Off Topic, but you guys know.

Does "expand the array" mean to pick up and mirror the extended partitions and logical drives?

Question Two: On a RAID system, am I to assume that the first partition should NOT be bootable?

(I'm trying to get a "standby" disk ready in case of a harddrive failure in the furture).

Thanks, I appreciate the help.

Allan,

Can you get that tech support now that you were complaining about over the weekend? For what you spent on that new server they should at least give you some free advice.

Allan,

You need to configure the spare drive in the RAID controller configuration utility. This ususally can be accessed either through the bios via a hot key during the boot process or through a utility that is installed after the OS has been loaded. It is commonly called a "hot spare". Email me if you have questions.

The BIOS app or Win app will format and partition to the orginal "live" drive?

Geeze, that would be nice and easy.

This is why I hang out here! Always someone who knows the answers. :>)

RAID controllers when configured with a hot spare will automatically utilize the hot spare drive in the event that another drive in the array fails. This is the whole point of RAID technology. The sticky part is that unless configured to notify someone, the controller may accomplish this task without anyone's knowledge until the 2nd drive craps out and there is no more spare to take care of the issue and the whole thing crashes.....ooops.....

Yep,

Following you so far. What I'm wondering about tho is that "Expand The Array" thing.

These drives have a small portion (3 gigs) partitioned off for the OS and then a second partition for the rest of the drive for the program data storage.

Do I need to "expand the array" to make sure I'm mirroring that data partition? I.E. Secondary arrays?

Thanks, You're making my day so far. :>)

Aw Ha, that makes sense.

I went into the documentation on the CD GUI. It basically says the same as you; stick the new drive in and hit the "Rebuild" button.

It's the Adaptec 2100S.

Thanks for all your help.

Enjoyed the interchange between the two of you, as I always do when I haven't a clue as to what is being said, but the principals understand each other perfectly and the goal is accomplished. "Good on ya", Internet.

Allan,
If you don't want this to happen again, you nned a complete, verified backup (every day with rotating Fridays (4)) Remember - hardware will fail.

Nick,

RAID "IS" a mirrored, redundancy backup system that simultaneously writes to multiple hard drives in real time.

That's what I'm working on; the actual back up system itself. But, I also want an extra spare backup drive for the backup system. :>)

Allan,
With all respect, I've been doing network installations for 17 years, lightning, fire, or just plan old "that shouldn't happen" will make you wish for an off-site backup.
