The original subject was "10SI Delco alternator problem".

How do you do the regulator test tab trick? I have an 10SI alternator that has stopped charging for some reason and would like to try this? Which hole are you using?

Look on the back of the alternator.

There is a hole shaped like a "D" near one of the regulator bolt end tips where they come thru the frame. Look inside this hole and you will see the grounding lug of the regulator.

Take a small screwdriver and ground that lug to the side of the "D" hole with the engine running above an idle. It should make the alternator go to full charge.

Doesn't always work tho. :>(

A 10SI is $49 and change with a lifetime warranty at most auto parts stores: they will test it there. You have a hard time rebuilding one (brushes, bushing, bearing, regulator, diodes) for that. Even checking with the tab will only tell you if it has a problem.
