boat motor mag.

I am looking into a Ted Williams boat motor and there is no spark out either coil so I think the magneto is bad so is there anyone who can fix them. the part is no longer available from Sears. Thought it may be available through Tecumseh haven't found it yet. Anyone have experience with this type of problem?

Go to the Antique Outboard Motor Club web site. There is a bulletin board there where you can ask such questions.

did you clean the points? That may be all that is wrong.

Someone on the AOMC web site probably knows that motor and whether the mag / coils were prone to failer or not, how to sort of test them with multimeter, etc.

thanks Tim I wish it had points but it is the solid state ign. so I think that means it is electronic. but I pulled the fly wheel and cleaned all the contacts with no result.

Roy,

I've found that both coils will rarely both fail at the same time, look at all your wiring, especially kill switches. If it has the flywheel with magnets that pass by pickups, make sure all is clean and the pickups are working properly. I'm sure somewher there is a test for all these components with a multimeter.

I have checked all the wiring and even disconnected the kill switch. the magneto seems to be the problem and I checked with the local small engine shop he says definitely the mag. but they are no longer available.
