Diesel or heating oil?

My brother just converted to gas heat in his home. I have 3 diesel tractors 2 Fords and a Massey, He just offered me aprox. 120 gallons of no 2 heating oil. Can I use this in my tractors with out doing damage? Thanks Dave

Absolutly not! You should give it to me to use in mine. ;-) It used to be the same stuff. As of last Dec. off road diesel is ultra low sulfur. Heating oil is still allowed to have a higher sulfur content and is not supposed to be used in tractors etc. but some might be. It will work just fine in your tractors but it will make you an outlaw.

It's basically the same thing. The specific gravity (weight) is the same but I think you'll find that the Cetane is lower in the furnace oil. They run fine on it once the engine is warm but they will start hard... that's what I've observed anyway.
If you've got a poor engine already you'll quickly find the dead cylinders with a good blast of furnace oil. They're be some clattering, banging and coughing, etc...
Otherwise, I don't believe you'll see any negative impact from the use of furnace oil.

Yes. Same stuff
I worked on a fuel barge and on a port the other side of Quebec City we filled the barge with the hose marked "diesel/heating oil"
That was over 2 years ago
I dont know if they do anything different now with low sulfur fuel
