Got the chance for the first time to put my 600 John Deere sprayer to work. Seemed to work ok. He sprayed a 4.5 acre field of beans and about 7 acres of corn with it. Its a good conversation piece.

And a late pass in some good size corn.

You guys are crazy to be spraying in short sleeved shirts with no respiratory protection.

When I joined the Marine Corps in 1953, weed and pest control was done with crop rotation and cultivation. By the time I left the Corps in 1963, chemicals had taken over. Any young farmer who wanted to be considered progressive thoroughly doused his crops with all the latest chemicals. Personal protection from the effects of the chemicals was given no thought.

Now, those same farmers, in their 50's, 60's and 70's are dying wholesale from all sorts of wierd cancers.

Do you suppose there's a connection?

Yep those early years we didnt know much about chemicals and their long term effects. Things have changed alot. Round up is very very safe to people and the environment. There was some discussion about applying insecticide with this sprayer on this particular corn field but I said we couldnt do that for just the reasons you are saying. Always best to limit contact with any pesticide, especially those insecticides.

Okay, now that you're discussing this, I'll add what came to my mind seeing the old combine pictures. (BTW, thanks, those bring back good memories) I had 2 farmer uncles that died with "farmer's lung". Breathing dust from the open combine platform isn't good on a body either. At least in this case you weren't at it very long.

great pictures, that is impressive both the harvest and spraying pictures, machinery looks great and looks like you have them dialed in. crops look great, looks like a prosperous year for you. been running old un air conditioned machinery all my life and yeah it will probably kill me someday but i guess i could have a heart attack at any moment too. i think a few days of working in the dust is worth seeing those old machines doing what they were ment to do. don't know much about that jd sprayer does that have a 50 jd engine in or was it the dubuque engines? looks like you got the nozzles spraying a nice pattern, keep up the good work with that nice equipment.

We do have alot of fun. Its hot and dusty but we all enjoy running that old machinery. The 600 was deeres first self-propelled sprayer. They came out in 61 or 62 and it is powered by the same little Dubuque built three cylinder that was in a 1010 tractor. Days like these are enjoyable and they sure do make you appreciate the ease of farming today.

Today's chemicals are a whole lot safer to use than even 10-15 years ago, never mind what was being used in the 50s and 60s.

Bill, don"t you just love the power steering on that thing? I ran one of those over no telling how many thousand acres. Slow going down the road also. We finally bought some 3 point sprayers and put one on back of the 4440, boy was I HAPPY! Thanks for the pictures.
