Farmall SA steering box

I know the old Farmall's had a lot of play in the steering. Mine has about a 1/4 turn of play on the steering wheel. The shaft that comes out of the box to the tie rod has the play and moves up and down. I don't find an adjustable screw like some units have. Won't be driving it a lot. Do I live with it, or is it a tear down? Yes...I'm tring to save money to buy Gas/Diesel.

If it moves up and down the top bearing is probably shot. All bushings, bearings and seals will run around 50. I would replace all of them if you tear it down. Does the steering shaft move end ways when turning the wheel that means the bearing on the end of the shaft us also bad. You will need to remove the axle first so you can then lower the bottom of the steering sector. I have rebuilt several in the last few yrs and was well satisfied when finished. Filled with 150wt gear oil when done.

Thanks Gene for the info. I have tied into about everything except a steering box. If I just take the lock nut off of the end of the steering shaft will the top bearing, seal, and steering shaft just come out the top of the box? The rest of it seems snug enough for the short driving my wife will be doing. Yep this is a "her" tractor. Thought I would try that before taking the axle off.
