Tractor driving wife

So the other day I was short of help, so I decide lets ask the better half if she would like to drive baler tractor, she has been there whenever I needed her for the last 3 plus years, she hopped on the old Cockshutt 40 like she grew up on it after a 10 second lesson she drove like a pro. When done she said she loved it, I may have created a monster, but thats a good thing. Sure wish we had gotten together before the first 2 failures, I think I'll keep her.

Some years ago when I had my whole place in hay my wife drove the baler(not bailer sp.) tractor a lot of the time. She did really good after just a short time. Any one who can bale hay with and little under capacity McCormick #45 baler pulled with a hard steering, no live PTO John Deere D, followed by a home made wagon made on 1932 Chevy axles can drive anything. Guess I'll keep her for another 44 years.

This will tell my age I guess - but- My Mother always said she did not need Womens Lib!!!
She knew how to drive a wheat truck, move Irrigation pipe, sort cattle, and fix fence!!!!

I miss her!!

My wife likes to drive my TO 30, but I wouldn't let her use any implements. I don't think she could handle the front end lifting with a heavy disk on. She just plays and joy rides.

My wife can run a tractor a little bit, but she doesn't want to get too good at it. She's scared I'll draft her into doing it all the time.

My wife's an old farm gal. When I was farming, come planting time, she'd work the ground ahead with my 856 and 20 foot disc while I followed with the D19 and planter.

We got done in a hurry.

Our neighbor's wife was a city gal he met in college. Now she can wheel a big John Deere and 26 foot disc around better then he can.

Does this mean there is hope? Rigistered nurse with 200 acres. 560 IHC. M Farmall, 80 acres corn. 40 acres beans after wheat. some hay and some pasture. Mow pastures (hilly) with 20 ft Howse rotary cutter. Hire spraying, combining and grain hauling.

Out of 4 people I get to rake hay for me my wife will do a better job than the other 3 [men] . She likes pullin the sq. baler too but the sq. baler wont ever get wore out around here , a few wagon loads a yr. If they had`nt invented the round baler I dont think I`d have very many cows !!

I have taught my wife how to operate All my equipment, including my dozer and backhoe. She enjoys all of them but has to stop and think just what works what. She makes very few and small mistakes. I do this for convenience and safty. One never knows when an emergency may occur and it's good to know the help is available. She knows she is not an operator but a helper and she's always ready.

My mother has run every piece of equipment on our farm be it the swather, baler, combine, grain truck, cultivator, discer, etc.....Most of which never had a cab or A/C except for the last peice, a Versatile 4400 swather which she is running as we speak........

This equipment was less than pristine I might add, it required a fair bit of patience and talent to operate since if you didn't hold you mouth just right it would fall apart(a virtue of owing old worn out equipment).............

She was able to repair canvases/slats, change guards/sections, replace the odd bearing, etc., all on her own while Dad was able to continue whatever operation he was in the middle of without having to stop costing time which can be quite precious during haying/harvest time..........

I'm not trying to take away from the accomplishments of others but in my mind there is no comparision between her and other women who operated new equipment under close to ideal conditions..........

Looking back at what she'd accomplished over the years I can't find the words to adequately describe my admiration and respect.............

Nancy can operate all 9 of our working tractors.

Nancy has her own tractors; 'Old John' her dad's 48A and 'Sparky' her 51M.

Both tractors have finishing mowers and she used them last Saturday to mow the yard and around the corral and shop.

Next weekeend she will use her 48A to spray one of the hay fields.

She mentioned yesterday that she wanted to use the 640 hay rake this coming Saturday.

She is a lot of help and takes an interest in most of the equipment that is either rebuilt or repaired.

Life is good when you like your partner.

Don't take her tractor pulling, you will end up toting more tractors to pulls for her than for yourself....Glad you got a good'un and glad you brag on her. Take care and have a good'un. CL

The best I've been able to do is get her to run a push mower. (self propel required) I figured I could get her to drive a rider and I'd trim, etc.
Oh well, could be worse.

My gratgrandmother had a ford 8n i think, that she did every thing with. God bless her, she was 92 and still had a full garden that she was in everey day.

I put the banker's daughter in the drivers seat of the 1086. She drove it about 30 feet and declared she would never go near anything so dirty ever again.

My wife drives while baling hay as well. This fall I'm gonna try to teach her to do some tillage, either moldboard or chisel plow.

My small town wife drove the baler tractor for me. I got a bale basket now.

I got a better plow, & she started plowing for me. Now does most of the fall plowing.

This winter I got a better field cultivator. Now she did most of the field cultivating this spring.

So, can't wait to get that combine home, & see how fall goes......

;) ;) ;)

My wife likes to rake hay and does a fine job of it. Doesn't back up at helping with anything we need to get done. Doesn't like to drive the pull tractor if we have to pull another one.
