O/T,daughters 96 Corsia GM car came here making a groaning ,growing sound in the Drive train.. She goes to school 65 miles away, dont get to see this car often , Drives good ,tires seem perfect,206 thou miles, CVjoints Maybe , Thanx Jim

Just a guess, but one or both of the front hubs might need replaced. It happened on my son's 96 Cavalier. I thought the transmission was going out, but it was the hubs making all that noise.

When was trans filter changed last ? Wheel bearing, maybe ? CV joints will clunk like a bad u-joint when turning, does pitch change at speed ?

Like Tom said, pro'ly front wheel bearing/hub assy's.That many miles, might as well repl both.

Front wheel bearing hub.Drive it on a road with no other cars around.Drive down center of road turn steering wheel from side to side like your driving on a slalom course. The noise should go and return as you turn the wheel. This will verify the problem and help determine which one.If it was my daughter I would replace both sides.Mark

Drive it on a long sweeping curve, does it get worse? try a curve the other way. This will tell you if it is a hub bearing and which one.

Are ya sure it is in the drivetrain or maybe could it be the suspension?

That "groaning" noise is usually a problem with the upper strut load bearing.

A strut bearing CAN'T cause a groan noise. They will only make noise when turning the steering wheel. Most likely a front wheel bearing. Like some of the others said, do some swerves on the highway. Swerve left and it loads the right side and vice versa. Whichever loaded side is loudest, thats where the failed bearing is. The trans is very unlikely a problem. The th125 never gave much trouble. The 4t45 is known for catastrophic gear train failure, but they normally fail early in vehicle life if there is a problem. When they do go, the wheels usually won't turn in reverse, power or pushing.
