cummins diesel hard to start

I recently purchased a 2001 Dodge that runs fine but if shut it off it sometime won't start back up right away. Could this be tranfer pump notholding fuel or does some know what it might be? IT is a manual tranny and if you push it a couple feet it starts and runs fine. THANKS:

The transfer pumps on these are nothing but trouble. In addition to hard starting you may also notice an occasional hesitaton while driving. The bad part is much of the time they don't quit all together they just act up. If possible a psi test would do a lot to determine the condition of the fuel pump. Many of the new fuel pumps are bad right out of the box also.
Fuel pumps aside a fuel filter that is improperly installed could also cause hard starting. The gasket can not seat properly and allow fuel to run back to the tank. Any other fuel leaks around the injector lines or a bad timing sensor could do the same. If you have a push in adjustable gap timing sensor try decreasing the gap.

I would look hard at the electronic transfer pump before I drove it or ran it ANY. If it is bad, it can ruin your injector pump and that will be a pretty big expense. I replaced mine at 150,000 even though it was working fine and I added a sensor that will light a lite if the pressure now drops below 4 PSI. I also keep a spare pump in my truck for emergency. It could be the filter as well. but I would definately verify the fuel delivery system to the inj pump before anything else.

I hooked a maual fuel gauge in the line from filter to Inj Pump and mounted it in the cab, will let you know at all time if lift pump is working.
Should be mandatory on any vehicle.
