I am wanting to do some research ahead of time for buying a 65-70 HP Tractor old antique or newer. I would like to use it for hauling manure and baling round bales eventually when I get those two items. Any suggestions on good reliable and dependable tractors that I can work on if necessary. I am not partial any particular brand but I do own a AC D-15 series II I use for cutting hay, raking, square baling. Thanks

65-70 is a bit small for any of the round bailers we have used, 100+ works better. As for a tractor about that HP, we have a MF 165 and I would honestly recomend something else.

I am partial to my ford 6700 in about that range. Mine is turned up a little but befor that did well with a Vermeer 605C baler as long as you did not have too much in it up or down real steep hills.

If you are not brand loyal (like most of us are) go with a color you have a GOOD dealer for close.

lmccoy: I can't understand all this concern for hills, round baler and bale don't weigh more than 5,000Lbs. and any 50 hp tractor with enough ballast will handle that on the steepest hills.

There are some round balers that seem to require a lot of hp. Best to avoid those as they are just an expensive way to make hay. Back in 1976 I bought a new IH 5x6 baler, and I found 560 or 656 were actually faster than 1066.

My advice, stay with your color of chioce get 65 PTO hp, not engine hp. Go for IPTO, two valve dual hydraulics, power steering and definitely 3 point hitch.

Later model Ford/NH 6610 is a very good solid tractor at about 70 PTO-HP. I wanted the Ford, but bought a 1983 Massey Ferguson Model-690, Cab-H-AC, 67 PTO HP, and have no complaints, does lots of work on little diesel with the Perkins 248-4. Tom

Always had IH but got this MF with front wheel assist. It's a 81 model in the Hp range you are wanting. No cab, no bells and whistles. Once you have had a mfwa tractor, you will never have a 2wd for all around chores. They don't turn as short. Brother has had a Hesston mfwd, hard to get parts for but a nice tractor. He has had a Kubota , to small, now he has a MF 3660mfwd, a little larger than what you are wanting. There are 3 Masseys now close by in a all IH and JD area. A close by dealer would be a big + for any brand.

I have an Int. 806 gas with a westendorf loader. Can do it all. I think it is 90 HP. Deere's 4020 and 3020 have stood the test of time.By the way I really like my MF 165 , but I don't bale with it.

Thanks for the advice so far. There must be another lmccoy on here I do not recall talking about hills. LOL Since this is my first time on the boards. :)

My grandfather had a AC 6080 with cab, loader, and front wheel assist. I have to admit I hated the thing. For one it was huge, the clutch was hard on your leg muscles when using the bucket to load poop, and the levers for the bucket were a pain always getting stuck in one position or another. As long as the snow did not get over a foot in one wack I get by pretty good with D-15 actually prefered it to do chores and whatever else I could.

I have been looking into Massey fergusons. The first one I ever seen was reburbsihed and sold for $5400 on an auction. It was I think about 35-40 HP I do not remember which one. Those tractors look like they could hit a tree and not have but a scratch. I have lots of trees on my farm. LOL

Anyways, I will keep all of your suggestions in mind as I am looking. My nieghbor has a JD 2020 I have drove and I liked it pretty well.I guess I should look for something that is for the better part economical on gas or diesel. I do not need bells and whistles and can live without a cab I just bundle up really good and make sure I feed cattle on warmer days that are not 20-50 below. :)

Another thing I should look into is round balers. My grandfather had a New Holland 849 that I have used. I did alright with it and had to get use to how it rolled up bales. It did not like fluffy light hay and the bales were kind of puffy as I would call them. Any suggestions there on what has worked for anyone would be appreciated. Thanks again.
