john deere 620 troubles-governer??

I have a 1956 jd 620, i was driving it and everytihng was fine and all of a sudden the power steering went out, well i poked around and i didnt see the fan turning so i shut it off. When i started it up again it still wasnt turning and when i shut it off i heard a grinding noise (not loud) in the governer. Is it the gear on the shaft to the fan? the hydraulic pump works fine so its not the gear on the governer. could it be the keyway on the shaft? any help would be nice as i am supposed to pull with it on sunday. thanks

yes it has ps on it but it doesnt work because of this problem, nothing is running up front, the fan isnt turning, and if the fan isnt turning the generator isnt turning, the wwater pump isnt turning, everything doesnt work. I have a feeling its the gear on the shaft that runs off the governor gear. thats gonna cost me

Something snapped or gave way in the shaft components. I sure hope your gov. gears didn't rip themselves out. First, remove steering pump and then go from there. You might have blown a coupling or worn off all the splines on the pump shaft.

If not, then pop off the gas tank stuff and rip off the fanshaft tube assy and look at the gears. Might want an IT manual to have a look see but this IS NOT gonna be done by sunday.

do you think it will run long enough before over heating for me to pull with it since the water pump is not running? I think i should be good for a bout 10 minutes.

Hmm... do you want to chance it? 20 dollar possible fix that can turn out to be a 500 dollar fix? Worse case scenario is all the teeth in the governor are currently going through your bearings.

I wouldn't give a crap for pulling bragging rights.

Just my 2 cents, is all.

Good luck.

I had the exact same thing happen to my 720 diesel when out disking one day. Turned out it was the fan shaft drive gear on the governor shaft. It had broken before and some idiot put it back together with a gob of JB weld. The gear and the shaft were junk. I ended up going to a yard and getting a whole gov shaft with a fan shaft drive stub also. I suspect that you will find a similiar issue.

i just pull for the fun of it, i like to hear it work. It seems like eevery year i bring it down to that show one of my tractors breaks, last year my jd B quit running, this year its the 620. ugh

My oh my, the things people do to get things back in working order.

Sometimes, you can't fault them because they probably were poor, but other times, you're like, what the HECK was this dude thinking??

How much did that cost you? I dont want to spen too much as i already have about 2500 in it, i paid 5 grand for it. lets just say i got took.

I hear you on that one. Seems like money pits... ONLY when you pay such a fat price for them in the first place!
