Pulling tree stumps.

Well this guy is more ambitious than I am. I usually won't pull a stump that big. That tractor is clearly not a hydrostat. And when I pull trees I won't abuse a chain like he does.
Pulling a stump.

I wouldn't want to tear my freakin' yard up just to remove a stump. I'd MUCH rather put a flower pot on top of it and leave it at that!

I was lucky this spring when i snapped our chain at the end and not in the middle. Only lost 3 chain links. (Stump was also twice the size of his)

Dan I would not abuse my chain or spade either. Poor chain, I usually put my chain in my closet over night. The spade I wont use because I am 6'4" and might break it, always let someone smaller than I am because I dont want to hurt it.

That guy's a walking death trap. Putting someone in that location with a camera is criminal.

Pulled/removed 7 stumps around my place (thanks Katrina) several weeks ago with a Komatsu PC 120 excavator with thumb. Took about 3 hrs. Was able to dig around, push, and pick them up. Stacked several in a burn pile. Others hauled off in a dump truck. Wonder what that guy plans to do with the stump.

I don't know looks like he did everything correct to me he cut all the big roots dug it out all the way around and all he to do was pull it out of the hole. Since he never spun the tires in the loose dirt I would say it was a pretty easy pull. It hard to tell how close she was with the camera as they have pretty good telescopic lens now Mine can go out 1000

I really dont see anything wrong with it. He did jerk a little much, but not that bad. Since the stump was already loose the jerk wasnt as bad as if the stump was stuck in the ground.
As far as the chain breaking. Chains dont whip when they break. Cables do, but chains dont. I have broken a couple.

I just slap an worn chain on my chainsaw and cut it right off at ground level so I can mow over it. Then i cross hatch the heck out of what's below that level to speed up the decay. Poor man's stump grinder :)

Hi Stan. Your not doing anything wrong. The problem is your computer. In order to watch a video your computer needs a program such as " Real Player " or " Windows Media Player " to open and run the video. Check the list of programs on your computer and see if anything like those are there. If not, use Google to find them and download. Most are free. If you can't do that, talk to your computor supplier.

I can think of a few people killed with chains. Last one was a few years ago. 17 yr old kid asked to go help pull his buddy out of the ditch after a night of drinking and mudding and before the cops would show up. Chain broke and went right through the back window of his pickup and in the head. Dead instantly.

Where the problem is with chains is because they have to get a running start to jerk them out of the mud and start them rolling. Back up too far and get too much jerk for the chain and it recoils from being stretched. That is why they recommend using nylon ropes/straps which allow you to jerk someone out.

When I worked in the oilfields, I've broke a few 1" winch cables (usually at the knot). It just drops the trailer/load but all the cable ever did was recoil back into a mass of coils. Nothing life threatening but we did have headache racks on the winch behind the cab. But with a winch truck we also never had to jerk on the cable either.

We pull out rocks that way all the time except we have more chains wrapped around the rock. Some of the rocks we pull out are as big or bigger than that stump. I've seen chains break but all they do is fall in place. If you're a drunken kid with a pick-up in the middle of the night, all bets are off, but the way I see it that guy did a nice job of stump pulling.

A long time ago, you used to see old stumps turned on their sides & piled side-by-each into a row to make a stump fence.

Don't see 'em anymore, except in pictures. Anybody out there have a picture they can post?

Chains absolutely do whip if they break in the right place. Anybody see the first episode of Ice Road Truckers? Polar Bear Hugh nearly got hit with chain when it broke while he was tying down his load.
I've seen back windows of vehicles broken out by whipping chains and straps.
