Hey old pard, you are much too nice of a fella to have to mess with those old chain balers, here in my neck of the woods you can not hardly give one away.. Its just too hard to get hay put up right with one with our crazy humidity and the weather the way it is...also good used belt balers are not that hard to come by here, what are you wanting and I will keep an eye out for one..

Hi Ol' Bud,

I'm really wrestlin' with myself on this.

New chains and new tubes come to $2300 .................plus all the other stuff it will need. I know darned well it will eat that $3500 I had figured on.

I've really got to chew on this awhile. If I decide to get a belter, it would have to be a John Deere 567 or one of those NH 688s.

Went over and talked to my neighbor with the 688 yesterday. He says he's not so sure that either belt baler will out-eat this old 855. However, he traded his chainer off when he ran a 6" fence post thru 'er and it peeled all the bars in about an eye-blink's time.

He was right where I'm standing now, but he puts up 300 acres too. :>(

Alan, if you do get a belter, and you should, let me know I can get belts for jobber cost.
Neeighbor of mine has a nice New Idea, 486, a new set of belts with it, never put on yet, always shedded. Not used for three years as he bought a NH BR780 net wrap new. He'd take 2500 for it. We're about 350 miles from you.

Allen,

Been kind of following your posts on this. JD and New Holland both make good balers. Don't know if you have a good Vermeer dealer, but they make a great, inexpensive baler. I got a 604 j I picked up for $1500 at auction. I've put around $1000 in hoses and bearings and haven't looked back. Just trying to give you something else to chew on.....

they do but they have a gauge on them to tell you how tight you are rolling them. it's always best( as far as i've seen with dad's) to roll them tight as ya can...otherwise they sag when you drop them, saves a little twine too if ya wanna get technical.
dad just bought a NI 435? works good but needs a new sprocket

Allan, for only a little more than the chains, plus delivery, I would look seriously at that. Soft core are the same as chainers, nobody wants them, and they do a good job. I am seriously considering looking for an old Claas when I get a new round baler, chep heavy, only drawback is the bearings, speaking of which, as a word of warning, CHECK THEM ALL. Those rollers fit tight, heavy, and aggravating. I think a soft core might just fit your pocket book. Then, you will have a runner, a backup, and a backup to the backup.
