OT- Calcium and tap water

I would installed a water softner and that took care of the calcium I had but not in my tap/drinking water. I have a line that pulls before the softner for the ice/water dispenser on my refridgerator since I don't want to drink soft water. So what is a good way (read: inexpensive yet effective!) to filter out the calcium. I have cloudy ice cubes and they have a bit of an odor to them. Water is clear and tastes really good but obviously isn't as pure as I think it could be.

Hello JoeBob/IN
There are inline water filters that you can install for the refrigerator water inlet.
A kit will have all you need including the valve for the cold water tap. They are made for odor removal, sediment removal, taste , just pick the one you need. Any home supply store
carries them... Home Depot Lowes ETC.

Calcium, (lime) is a dissolved electrolite. Only way to remove it is with ion exchange, (salt based water softener), reverse osmosis filter system, or distillation. Unless the calcium is really bad, your cheapest option is to use water softener water, and drink bottled water.

I switched from salt crystals to Potassium Chloride crystals several years ago and I like it. We use the softened water out of our tap to water plants (they love potassium residues) and to drink ourselves. No change was needed on the water softener.

I lived in an apartment for a few years in a building that is several hundred years old. The water pipes were well before WWII time and the water had a smell (not to mention a taste). It tested good, but...............
I bought a filter (earlier version) like this and solved the smell and it tasted as good or better than bottled water. Cheap and safe fix. You'll think you've discovered a new world when you make a pot of coffee or cup of tea.
