Who gets your bolts?

I usually try the hardware store first, then the auto parts stores. I'm out of luck here.

Since I'm trying to basically put dual tires on my durascamp, I need longer lug bolts. .621" knurl, 1/2" threads, I'd like them 4 3/8" long, but I'm told the shops around here can't even get them that long and I need to drill out my hubs and replace my rims. Existing lug bolts are 1 3/4 inches long.

Now what do I do? I'm told redi-bolt is grade 2, and will snap before I go 10 feet if I put nuts on the ends of the existing lugs and use 2 more nuts to keep the outer rim in place. Or it will work loose all the time.

NAPA has the best assortment of wheel hub studs. If there was one ever used by the factory, they should have it in their catalog if not their drawers.

McMaster-Carr (as well as Hockel Supply in Ames, IA) (www.mcmaster.com) has threaded rod in grades 2, 5, and 8 as well as brass and fiberglass. The common threaded rod is often almost up to grade 2 strength.

You can keep things from working loose with some loctite in the threads. Some grades will come apart if you insist, some may not.

McMaster ships out of Omaha to me, shipments are very quick.

Local hardware chain McLendon's Hardware is my first choice. If they don't have it, there's a Hi-Strength Bolt Co, a Fastenal and a Tacoma Screw Products store within a couple miles of work, and a Grainger's if I go a couple miles the other way.

In Omaha, we have a place called NE-IA fastener. They have always had the 'odd ball' stuff that I could ever need. Greg

We have a place here called "Park Machine and Supply", they carry alot of odd ball stuff like that. Any realy big bolt that a iron dealer wants $10 or more for I can more offten than not get there for less than $2. They have a web site and I am pretty sure they do mail order stuff too. parkmachine.com

From dealings I have had with'm if they ain't got a bolt you will need to get a machine shop to make it.

That is another idea, with the down turn in the economy, around here you can get stuff made pretty cheap by folks that 4 years ago would hang up on you if you called and said you needed a bushing for a hay baler made.

Good luck.

Dave

Hey Dan,
...not sure what you're calling "redi-bolt"... is that what we call all-thread (or threaded rod)? If so, all thread is available in various grades, ya just gotta ask for the hard stuff at your bolt&nut supplier. D

I needed some large bolts that neither Farm & Fleet or TSC carried. Looked on the Net and found Pointe Products Inc. Decent prices and they promptly delivered. UPS damaged a box and lost a couple of the larger more expensive bolts. Pointe Products sent replacements at no charge either for the bolts or shipping.

As some of the others have said I would try McMaster-Carr. They have a location near Chicago, IL.
