Need hay knowledge

I have about 5 acres of grass and weeds that I use as a lawn but don't really need it. A neighbor across the road has cattle and does some of his own haying, I think. Here's the deal...I'm considering asking him to burn down the 5 A. and plant it in hay. For this effort he can have all the hay (this would happen in the first year at spring). Do you think after that, like in year 2, I could be entitled to something, even though he would do all the work---cut,rake,bale,etc. Thanks. Even if he doesn't, I guess I save by not cutting it.

If he is going to prepare the seed bed .....sow the seed ,fertalise, fuel, all the labor......he should get it all off only 5a.....10 or more thats differnt.....

You might offer right from the start...he take 3 bales and you get 1.......that way he might break even.......

Depending on your location, rainfall/weather, type of grass sown, etc., it may take several years before the new grass starts producing..............

If it was accross the road from me, I'd do it for it all, on a 5 year contract. Any less than 5 years and I'd want a percentage of my establishment costs back.

Most of the custom operators I know this year are charging at least 100 dollars per cutting to come mow a 5 acre tract and they get all the hay.

Free rent for five years in exchsnge for establishing the stand? That would never fly around here. This is (was) dairy country, renter would pay normal rowcrop rent, landlord would pay half the alfalfa seed cost if he wanted it seeded down, normal rotation of three years. And custom operators getting $20 per acre to cut, plus all of the hay? Here, cutting alone used to be 8, maybe 10-12 now with higher fuel, granted small plots are a pain, but I don't know how you'd find any customers here.

It will cost him $350.00 to $450.00 ,for seed fert. chemicals ,not to mention fuel and labor .If you pay to establish stand I would let him have half to mow, rake .ted ,and bale and buy your half.
