MF 231 Rough Idle

I changed the fuel filter on my 231 and now its extremely hard to start and when it does start it idles rough and will only achieve a rough idle even at wide open throttle. I"ve bled the inlet lines at the injector pump. I checked all the gaskets on the new fuel filter. I do have a slow drip at the filter, maybe one drop every five min. I haven"t detected any leaks from the tank to the filter. I"ve checked the screen at the tank. The tractor ran like brand new before replacing the filter. Any help will be appreciated.

My MF294-4 is very difficult to get the air out. Bleed the injection pump at the two places it shows and it still takes a long time to get to running right. It will start hard and not respond to throttle inputs for 5-10 seconds.

I have a 231 and i hate it when service time comes with that fuel filter. I use filters from the massey dealer. My son decided to get cheap and by a fram filter. Samething happened to my 231 as you are describing the fuel bowl wouldnt fill up. Just a slow drip. I got that fram junk off there and put in a filter from dealership and she went back to normal. In comparing the filters (the fram was the correct one thru cross reference) was completely different in its filtering process and was not letting fuel flow properly.

Dunno why everyone seems to have so much trouble with them. It's just a CAV fuel system, rather unremarkable though it is.
Check that you have a good flow of fuel into the filter housing and that there is a good steady flow out the bleeder when you open that. Next, pull the shutoff, open the bleeder on the side of the pump housing and crank the engine until fuel shoots out that bleeder. Close it and push the shutoff in. Now open all 3 lines at the injectors, set the throttle to full and crank until you have good shots of fuel at each injector. Close the lines and start her up......

You also need to find the source of that fuel leak. Where fuel is coming out, air is going in... and that's likely the source of your problem.
