i have a 1948 8n i am restoring and i am converting it to a 12 volt. do i need a new solenoid or can i use the old one.
 
In general they will work a long time. Use it untill it decides to fail. It may not fail for years, if ever. JimN

You can replace it for $5.00 from Wells. Hal

Are you aware of the special, odd, internal wiring of the 8N solenoid?

Rather than applying battery voltage to it's small terminal to make it engage, this particular setup gets GROUNDED by the tranny-top neutral-safety start switch.

A common, modern, "fender-mount Ford solenoid" WILL NOT WORK with the neutral-safety start switch.
 
The Ford "N's" were WAY ahead of their time in that respect... having a neutral-safety start switch.
