plowing,planting

hi guys, my question is i have odd shaped field kinda like an hour glass, when i plow or plant should i try to keep all the rows straight? or go around edges then up and down middle? this year i went around edges first but just chocked the middle closer togather still had hour glass figure only tighter, thanks for response, planting corn and would like to cultivate for weeds going around edges then wont i run over stalks? already in this yr. just would like to know whats best for next yr.

Hi,,is this corn for your food plots ? If so ,go Roundup ready ,,and be done with it . Lot less work . Also if for plots really don't matter if straight rows, double planted seemed to work best for ours, thicker cover seemed more important than higher yeilds .

You could run the rows the short way, then they might end up all parallel, just have point rows where the field tapers. Irregularly shaped fields are always a pain.

Bryan;

What do you plant in your food plots? I bought some corn on ebay last year--uses a B24 plate according to the bag. Drought kind of did it in. It looks better this time, but still has a long way to go, so time will tell. I also planted WGF for food and cover. It's just getting started. I'd like to try some soy beans next year.

I did corn and soybeans the first year . Weeds took over and really looked bad. 2nd year , i did Round up ready corn and soybeans,,Corn looked real good,,,,too good ! Spent way too much on fertilizer. Looked better than the "Real " farmers corn , lol . Last year i cut back on the corn as lot of the corps in the area were planted to corn. I did some wheat, oats ,and one big plot of some mixture I got from Theisens/farm store. Had sorgum , brasica, and turnips. My god the turnips were awsome ,,they were huge . Deer dug through the frozen ground to get at those all winter . I think the sorgum made better cover and food for the pheasants than corn . I tried some of the expensive"Deer hunter blends " from sporting goods store, but think they were waste of money for what I needed .

I agree on the store bought stuff. With a little research, we can come up with as good if not better combination/proprtion for less money.

How do you think flooding will affect the pheasant hatch?
