Hey Guys,

Was Just wondering what hay prices are today? We are selling our hay for $2.50 a bail and i'm thinking thats pretty darn cheap. What do u guys think?

$2,50 a bale?? What do you bale it with horses?? Last year I was getting #.50 a bale and this year it will be more like $5.00 if not more for a small square and rounds around $65-75 each

oh 'sob' i wish i was near you guys, im paying 7.50 in the field when i can find it for 2 wire about 50 lb bales, the feed store, charged 18.00 a bale for 80 to 100 lb 3 wire square bales, i got a big old truck, but thanks to GWB, i cant afford the fuel, im in central nm

Way too cheap. I havent sold hay for that price since 2004. Right now I'm at 5.00 a bale on the wagon, and 4.00 a bale behind the baler on the ground. I cant keep it in stock either. Most of the custom balers here are at 3.50 dropped on the ground.

Last report I got was small squares going for $6.00, rounds going $72.00 at the local auction. I figure my out of pocket costs just to cut rake and bale this summer will be about $2.00 per small square - just to get them on the wagon!

My son recently sold some mostly fescue, but mixed-grass hay for $3.00 on the ground behind the baler in middle TN.

Yup, way too cheap....are you even making a profit at that price? You make the rest of us look bad and then everyone start whining "well so and so is selling for $2.50/bale." You should be over $3/bale.

You need to take a look at your costs. You SHOULD figure about .85/bale for ground. .85/bale for fertilizer. What kind of seed? how often do you re seed? fuel for tractors, maintenance, equipment value? 2.50 a bale your are loosing money UNLESS...1. Free ground rent 2. Extremly cheap equipment (junk) 3. really enjoy working for nothing. Our cost is about $4/bale. 20% Profit margin = $5.00 hay. Not getting rich either. RAISE YOUR PRICE!!!!

Raise your price until your customers quit buying from you.I usually buy 20 bags of 10 10 10 every year for the garden and hay. This year Ive bought 1 bag at 13.60.another dealer is looking for 18.60, got a price of 12.80 today.Since the fertilizer is bagged in a plant about 20 miles from here it looks like a bit of greed is entering into the price. The dealer the furthest away from the plant has the lower price.A study a few years ago showed it was costing 1.00 a bale to put hay in the barn.A farmer I talked with said he could do it for less with paid for equipment. When the cost of twine went up 3 cents a bale custom balers went to a triple charge for baling.I bought my own baler.I use fertilizer for side dressing sweet corn so buy later in the season and get a lower price.Again raise your price until customers quit buying from you.I can put a cord of sawed wood in my shed for 2 gallons of gas.If my fuel cost goes from 4.00 to 8.00 a cord of wood should not increase by a 100.00.
