What a good deal

2 years ago I went to an auction looking for a big round baler, I was tired of paying for custom baling and waiting for the baler to show up with a storm on the way, found an old Gehl 1500 that showed some wear and abuse but stood around all day and bought it for $350.00 . I figured at that price I didn't have much to lose. Spent a day repairing some belts and getting them all the right length, half the summer learning how to make a decent bale with the old girl and make about 250 bales, some not so pretty but the cows didn't spit them back. Well this is her third year and I figure it's paid for itself many times over. Just goes to show with a little tlc a guy can get by pretty cheap.

Both the Krone 125 and 260 we bought had been used hard, abused, and had dents and damage. For the price, we took a chance. We bought both balers for $3,200 (not as good as your $350) and had them worked on. We have less than $5000 total in the balers.

We have a small hay field and last year baled 40 bales with the 260. We baled 10 this May, again with the 260. It works just fine. First bale or two is usually ugly, but after that, they"re nice.

We have yet to use the 125, but plan on using it in the next few weeks.

Nothing wrong with buying used equipment, especially if the price is right.

The key words are "for the right price." At auctions, it just depends on how badly and how many people want an item. I'm looking to buy at 50-70% of new price, depending on the item. Invariably, if I have the money everything goes too high; if I'm tapped out, stuff goes for nothing. Factor in the scrappers too.

I buy a lot of stuff that way. Got a manure spreader for $5 and it had 9 sheets of used roofing tin in it. With just a little oil and a couple cross bars its back up and throwing the stuff out. I have also got sickle mowers that way and balers and tractors. All take time and TLC but I'm retired so I need something to do any how

Most of my tractors I buy are ones that someone else has given up on, and are not running. My mowing MF 231 is one I put a lot of hours on each year mowing. It came with a rod through the block. I am glad your baler is working out for you. Stan

Good for you. Saves you money, and the time you invested in fixing it up gives you not only a better knowledge and understanding of it, but more pride and appreciation for it. Animals are funny that way, looks tend not to mean as much as taste and being there to eat.

yup...dad just bought an older NEW IDEA round baler on ebay...$530 and all it needs is 2 belts and a little TLC. he gets tired of carryin' bales all the time and gives hime more of a chance to use his 706 ;).

I just bought 3 wheeled a gravity wagon for $150. Three wheeled in that one front wheel was broken clear off. Broke the king pin out of the spindle. Steel to repair it cost $9.00 and about 6 hours of work. Patching the rusted places in the box took another day and cost $44.00 for steel. Time doesn't cost for these jobs, it pays because it keeps me active and healthy, and I got a good wagon for about $200. Maybe I'll invest another $40 and paint the darn thing.
