OT--Goofy Gas Marketing

Looking at gasbuddy this AM: regular here in Portland from 4.13 to 4.49, diesel 4.63 to 4.99...
Across the river, in Vancouver, WA, regular from 4.15 on up...
But OR is one of the "no-self-service" states (it's illegal here to pump your own gas unless at a cardlock), and every effort to mandate self-service is on the ground that it "...will reduce gas prices because of the savings in wages-firing the pump jockeys...".
So, if OR stations are paying attendants wages, and WA stations aren't, and OR is selling gas cheaper than in WA, something about "...self service will reduce prices..." doesn't compute...
(This's not unusual; even before the run-up, Ptlnd gas was often cheaper than Vancouver"s).

The TV is getting inundated with commercials from the oil companies telling us how they're our friend and all the good they're doing for us.

Maark: I don't think it's gas taxes--in the 40+ years we've lived on the coast, in CA and OR, and done extensive driving in CA, OR and WA, there's never been a pattern I could see. One trip Cal was cheaper, next trip it'd be more expensive, and the same with WA, in relation to 0R.
2-3 yrs ago took a train tour in BC, drove up to Vanc BC; noticed gas in and near Vanc WA was very close to Ptld, did get a little cheaper up to Seattle area, but from Seattle north, the closer to Cnada the more expensive, until at the border was practically Canadian price!!
