Anybody Heard Of This?

Was helping my next door neighbor adjust his tie arms on his 688 NH baler yesterday.

Anyway, he was telling me that with the past few balers he has owned, that he's always taken off the windscreen.

Says the factory folks told him to do it and it increases the capacity of the baler by at least a third. The rep told him that the silly thing just "limits" the throughput of the machine.

Thought that was kind of interesting, as I always thought it was "needed" for a smooth, even feed.

Sounds like a pipe dream from a newbie area service rep just out of school. If that baler didn't need a windguard, it wouldn't have one. If it only needed one in certain circumstances, it would be an extra cost option.

Sure as shootin' if I tried that, I'd plug 'er tight with a great big "wad" right off the darned bat. :>)

And in light hay it likes to just keep rolling ahead of the baler instead going on in.

Hold down spring broke on mine once and caused all kinds of feed problems until I found the broken spring.

We had alot of light hay last yr. from the lack of rain and I was having a rough time , kept wanting to come up through the screen and pile up . if the screen was`nt there it would never of rolled up . Have to keep feeding it under the bale and the web . Neighbor has a Claus baler and the screen is easy`ly removed to unplug . I was raking for him and it pluged . After unpluging he forgot to put the screen back on and he did`nt go very far and the front of that baler looked like it had bloomed .

I remove mine all the time on my 650 round baler. In heavy windrows I dont need it and it just gives a place for hay to jam. I also remove it in corn fodder. Seams like the fodder is too course and likes to jam up on it....

I tried it once with a 664 and the thing wouldn't bale at all. It might in some crops but it sure didn't work for me.

I haven't a clue; never tried it. But, now that I'm noticing it, there are an awfully lot of balers in this country set up this way.

So, there must be something to the story. Neighbor says he takes 32' of swath if the hay is "lighter".

Dunno,

On our 851 chainers we run without the guard in late fall on long slough hay that has been dump raked, but you have to watch it close because if you plug it, it is plugged good, rest of the year and crops it stays on . On dry fluffy crops, a neighbor rigged up a single wheel in the center of the front of the tractor on a hydraulic that he pushed the windrow down with so it feeds into the baler better without dozing.

I remove it also in some cases. It comes off on my 570 small square when baling behind 30ft and 25ft grain platforms. Just not enough clearance to let it feed. Also comes off when I rebale large round into small squares. When it is on it is just floating all tension off otherwise yea really easy to plug with it there. But yes you can plug it with it remove but have only done it couple times so far with it removed. Plug it several times with it on
