Eliminating dewberry

Our land has not been farmed in over 35 years. Soil is light and depleted for the most part. Some areas have patches of heavy ground. I have fields of dewberry and it continues to expand. I'm hoping to get some rye in this fall to start to build up the soil. Has anyone had any experience with eliminating dewberry? I'm thinking about mowing it as short as possible and treating with a herbicide. Pastureguard and Cimarron are noted to work best. Any thoughts?

I have to agree with you john . We`ve got just a few around here and when ya get in a patch it fills the bucket up in a hurry . I`m sure if they was in productive ground I`d be fightin them though .

What "we" call blackberries grow on upright canes. Dewberries grow on the ground and send out runners. The produce a few berries, but nothing like the upright black berries. Dewberries are tough to even walk through without tripping. If I had fields of blackberries that sell for about $4.00 a pint, I'd quit my day job and retire.

I don't know dewberry, where I am we have Himilayan Blackberry. One thing I found out that may be helpful - find the proper Latin name for the dewberry (check with your local state extension people) and do a google search on it to find out the best control. What I found out was that my berry could be controlled with Roundup (I mow then spray in the late summer/early fall). Here is the thing, in the spring, all the juices are being translocated from the roots to the tops. If you spray then it is a waste of time - the tops look messed up, but it doesn't kill it. If you spray it in the fall, the herbicide is translocated into the roots - it then dies in the following spring. I get 80-90% kill. Find out the proper time or you may be wasting your money. Good luck.
