cost of a 3 or 4 month old bull calf

About a year ago I bought 1 white face hereford bull calf for $300. I think he was about 4 or 5 months old. He was wormy (bad coat of hair, kinda sickly looking, and after he was treated for worms he looked 100% better). It was hard for me to tell how old he was as I haven't been around bovines since I was a teenager and then I didn't pay much attention.

Anyhow I called an old lady that raises herefords as a hobby. She said she had 2 bull calves and one due soon. The 2 calves she had she said when they are 3 to 4 months old she would sell them for...$700. each...I told her I wasn't interested.

What is the going price for beef calves. Isn't it like $.80 to $1.00 per pound? I'm in Maryland if that helps. Thanks for any info.

$700 was high unless they were breeding grade bulls.

4-500 lb feeder bulls here are at $1.00 to 1.20 per pound.

wow believe you are getting rip off. Its a different breed. I sell holstein bulls when few days old for about 120. Just check what the market is. Changes every day.

Hey... where did you hear about this lady?? I live about a 1/10 mile from an older lady who has two bull calves. I know you're in Baltimore county somewhere.

bought 6 holstein bull calves at about 1 to 2 weeks old for between 20 and 40 dollars each this spring, but if you figure in an eighty dollar bag of milk replacer for each calf ...........

The lady I'm talking about is in Anne Arundel county. River Valley Ranch bought one from this lady back when, and RVR desided they didn't want him so I bought him from RVR. Now I'm ready to get 2 this time. So I figured I'd give her a call. But with that price it's a no go. Going to find somebody else.

I am in Lancaster County Pa. I just bought 2 beer steers. Averaged 390 lbs, and I gave $1.00/lb. They werent the best of the best, but still decent animals. A little on the thin side. Most guys with beef steers in the 400-500 range want about $1.25/lb Holsteins in the 300-400 lb range were selling at $.82/lb-$.85/lb at the Friday night feeder sale at Newholland a month ago. Check out www.lancasterfarming.com. There should be some cattle ads from your area in there. Or, you can come buy the ones I just bought. I will only charge you $600 each!
