Any wooded area there is people who travle around and custome saw logs. What is the price they charge? (per hour, foot, thousand etc) Some still have a stationary mill and custome saw if you haul in.

There is a guy in my area with a Woodmizer bandsaw mill- When I had him in a couple of years ago, he charged $195 per thousand. He put out a very good product, I was well satisfied. Be careful- the bandsaw type mills take a skilled operator, and if you get a rookie with poor equipment, you'll get wavy, unusable boards. He told me to "stick" it with two lathes between layers, not one lathe- not enough air circulation with one lath, and the wood will mold.

Go over to woodweb.com, find the "find a sawmill" link on the right side of the page, you'll find one closer than you think, most likely.

My neighbor across the road has a band sawmill. I had him saw a dozen dry elm logs for me. I was impressed with the lumber. He only charged me 30/hr. which I thought was to cheap so I gave him a bonus and some fresh eggs.

I have a band mill, and I charge 50/hr for me, the machine, and a hired man. I tried it by the thousand, but I was sawing a lot of salvage stuff and people wanted crooked, knotty logs sawed and I was having a time. In good, straight pine my rate works out to about 200/ thousand. With poor logs, it is more and the customer has to decide if it's worth it. I haven't had complaints about the price.
