I have a 1948 IHC H tractor that just went thru a barn fire. was wondering if the rear end gears and the M & W Hi-Lo would be any good, what would i look for or how would i tell if there good.

Any paint left on rear? Any oil left in trans or rear? If either of these are yes temps may not have been high enough to change metal properties.
Good luck,
Andy

Pull the Belt pulley cover (or pulley drive) and see if there is discoloration and carbon bluing on any teeth. If the oil is cooked out, it is toast. The other part of the equation is the value if the rest is pretty much toast. H trannys and rear ends are not uncommon. Only the 9 speed would have intrinsic value unless you already have a donor tractor to work with, then this one becomes the donor. JimN
