coverting M to live hydraulics

Anyone have any step by step instructions for coverting a 1940 farmall M to live hydraulics? How about adding power steering. Pictures and tips would be helpful. Thanks

One way to get live hydraulics is add later model cam driven live pump - Super M or 400 parts needed. Second method is belt driven add on pump: Char-Lynn power steering used this method and if you can find old kits would have everything you need, Large tank kit had live hydraulic available. Another method you might find in archives is salvage yard Chevy truck power steering pump with added tank and filter, home made brackets and extra belt pulley- in your case 2 Vbelt conversion to the flat belt? RN

Having convereted a couple of m's I found the best was any flange drive pump between the mag or dist drive and tne mag. I plumed to the old resevor on the belly pump and left the belly pump functional. On one for a large loader I added oil resivior (sp) to the new pump. the pump need not be I-H as i have used pumps from older case combines with the dc motor. As to the power steering I used a flow divider with priority to the power steering rather than add belt driven units. hoses and flow dividers are reasonable priced from hydraulics ind in omaha and figure cheaper than adding extra pump just for power steering. google will give phone or web address .

The whole process will cost about twice what the tractor is worth. Sure is nice when ya get done tho. :>)

First thing you do is watch on Ebay for a front engine cover for a SM, 400, or 450 and a live pump, or just a MW live pump.
2) Change the cam gear. The original M gear lasted a full 30 sec. The Sm-450 gear is stronger
3) Install pump and plumb like Allan shows and you're in business

Thanks for all your help gentlemen. Not being too mechanically inclined I have a few other questions. The hoses to the pump go to and from the belly? Do I have to remove the existing pump in the belly?
There was a recommendation of a flow divider. Is that in leiu of a power steering pump? And where do the hydraulic hoses from either the flow divider or pump connect to the steering? Thanks again.
