540 Cockshutt starter

I would like to find a schematic for a Delco-Remy starter for model # 1108073. I have a service manual I bought from here, but it doesn't have a parts breakdown of the starter. I think the brushes are bad, and would like to know what is in there before I get into it. Thanks, NorminN.B.

WHAT do you need... an electrical schematic, or a parts breakdown/parts list?

Does "NB" mean you're in The Great White North? Otherwise a good NAPA should be able to find the brushes and bushings in their Ag and Industrial Book, or any autoparts store selling Niehoff, Standard or Borg Warner electrical parts can get them IF they have a paper catalog and are willing to LOOK!

What is the serial number of your tractor? My book lists 3 different starters broken down by serial number, none specifying Delco Remy. I"ll then scan the correct page and send it to you.

Thanks, Bob. I would like to have the parts breakdown list for the starter. N.B. is New Brunswick, Canada. Next to Maine.

Thanks, Doug. My tractor is about 40 miles away at this time, so I don't have the tractor serial #. I have the starter serial # if that makes a difference. It is 9C19, mo# 1108073. It will be the end of the week before I can get to the tractor. It is gas by the way. I can change the brushes, anything else, will have to go to the rebuilder. Thanks again. NorminN.B. :D

Starters are a very generic and swappable item.
A larger remanufactured starter with the proper nose and pinion gear are sitting on parts shelves everywhere.
If it"s a diesel it"s impossible to install too high a HP starter.

Delco remy 1108073 starter is a 6 volt starter used on the 540 series cockshutt from 58-59 model years according to the Delco Remy catalog I have. Delco part numbers are as follows:

Brushes(4 used)-811553
Brush Spring-813521
Brush Holder-810226
Armature-1943709
Commutator End Frame-1908580
Field Coil upper or right-826282
Field Coil lower or left-826281
Drive End Bushing-1942504
Drive or Bendix-1943450
Drive Housing-1943708

I have seen a few of the drive housings cracked/broke on the 540's for some reason.
If 550Doug can send you a parts breakdown of the starter, you can match the Cockshutt numbers to the Delco numbers from the desriptions above. The Delco numbers should be able to be changed up at any Napa/Carquest type place. Beaware that that these numbers are old. Info comes from a 1961 Delco Farm Equipment catalog. These tractors were however still being produced in 1961.

I took the starter to the shop to get repaired. They said it needed a new bushing and cleaned. Brushes were good. Got it back and on, still wouldn't turn the motor over. I took it off and took it apart and found that the main stud was disconnected from the connection inside the case. Looked like it was soldered. Tried to solder it and it wouldn't stick. Tried to find another case, none around. A buddy mig welded it. I didn't think you could weld copper, but it held and is starting good now. Thanks for all the help. NorminN.B. :D
