O/T vacuum headlights

I got a 1966 Olds Toronado. the headlights do not want to go up as they should. the lights themselves come on but the vacuum doors do not open. I cannot find any vacuum leaks, I hooked it up to the milk pump in the barn, then the doors would open, so the canisters are working-any ideas? thanks-ray

If there are no vacuum leaks in the lines and the lines aren"t stopped up then the seals in the actuators have to be the problem. I"d just about bet that your milk pump is either pulling more inches of vacuum than your getting on the cars system or it"s pulling at least as good of a vacuum but can sustain the pull enough to overcome any seal leakage. In other words it"s pulling the same inches of vacuum but at a greater volume so it can sustain that amount of vacuum constantly instead of the vacuum dropping off due to leakages. Try putting a valve in the line to the actuator, put the vacuum to it, and then shut the valve. If there is no leakage across the seals the actuator should hold it"s place because of the valve, if it moves then it"s not holding the vacuum because the seals are bad. Good luck.

I have a 1967 Olds Toronado that had the same problem. Along the upper left fender are the air vacuum lines that have a splitter or Tee fitting on them. My outlet to the lights must be plugged or have a leak so when I switch the headlight line to a different terminal on the splitter then the headlights work as they should. I should try to get to the problem but I seldom drive the car at night so just waiting for the right mood and time to work on it. Hope this helps. Anybody looking for this model of car as I'm sorta into tractors big time now and should sell this thing. Has had about 15 grand put into it in the last 10 years. Migraine
