baler twine

Have been haying for 18 years, all I ever used was sisal twine. My father in law swears by the plastic twine. What I would like to know is which is better for the knotters on the baler? Some one told me the sisal wears on the Knotters more. I also think the mice chew throught the plastic tied bales more than the sisal. Any suggestions thanks j

My findings are the opposite. Plastic is harder on wear parts, ie. the billhooks, needles, twine discs, etc. And have had lees problems with plastic being chewed. Might be 6 of one and half dozen of the other.

I bought some bales with plastic about 10 years ago.

Must have missed a few twines and they got in the manure.

They sure raise hell with the spreader.

I swear at plastic twine. Only use it to round bale, hoping once I get some more storage, I can just use sisal. Plastic never goes away and wraps on everything.

For round bales it's all 28000' plastic twine and for squares it's all 9000 sisal. That plastic stuff is hard on the hands. I would also think that plastic yould be harder on the knotters.

Well, I guess it depends. Sometimes the plastic is easier because it is more consistent in the ball than sisal. Plus, if you are worried about how long it lasts, you can get the biodegradable plastic twine. It starts degrading as soon as sun hits it.

That plastic stuff never goes away. Sisal will rot in a few... We raise sheep, and the word is that plastic in the wool is about impossible to get out. Plus there's the problems of the animals getting tangled in the twine. Since sisal rots, at least it's not an ongoing problem. Many of the older balers do better with the sisal, because billhooks don't grip the plastic well. Either need to modify or replace billhooks with those made for plastic.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like sisal twins is just fine for my baler. Its a JD 346 small square baler. I told my father in law thats all they had back then, so it cant be to bad. But he says he would never put that in his baler, a JD 336. I dont know, Im tired of butting heads with him, he is always right, or so he thinks and Im always wrong. I just do what works for me. J
