I have a Ferguson TO30. I'm thinking about buying a 5-foot brush hog. My BIL says I might have trouble cutting heavy grass or rye. Do I have enough tractor?

yes the to 30 will do fine, if the stuff is real tall you may have to make a partial pass

I've stuck a 5' cutter on my Case VAC a few time when my other tractors were tied up. Cut a lot of 3-4 foot tall grass and brush with it - and the VAC has a bit less power than your T0-30. Worked the the tractor pretty hard in the worse stuff - but overall - did fine.

You probably want to stick an over-running clutch on the PTO - your tractor - if single-clutch - will do much better with it when hooked to a mower.

when i was in mowing business, i had a small iseki/bolens 20 hp tractor and a 4 ft. bush hog. i went through anything. including several acres of bottomland wild rye grass over 5 ft. tall. just take it slow and even make half width cuts and that does better than pushing the machine on full width cuts on thick/tall grass, brush.

Do not worry. The -30 will be fine. I cut 15 acres with a TE-20 and a 60" (5ft.) brush mower. Only issue I ever get into is the real thick stuff down in the swampy area. And as others have said... in thoes few areas you take a shorter width cut, or go a little slower to let the mower clear the cut material out.

I cut down Tulip Trees up to 1 1/2" no problem. I have cut briar hedges that were 10ft tall. One heck of a racket but the equiptment handeled it no problem.

Larry, I have been using a 5 foot JD brush hog on my ford 9n for over 15 years and it handles it fine. Just have to get used to how much you can cut and how high. I have mowed a lot of canary grass that was so tall I had to stand up to see where I was going. Usually takes two trips to do it though. I raise it up and then come back through again. Most stuff though is no problem. Just get the overunning coupler and it will be fine.

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like I'll be owning a brush hog. Plan to use it mostly to keep woodlot road free of sprouts and to eliminate invasive species in an old field along with some field mowing, mostly dewberry.
