OT Birds hitting windows- remedy?

Anyone have suggestions on how to keep birds from flying into the picture window here? I've tried hanging hummingbird feeder & thistle sock close to the window, pulling blinds part way down & putting lighted Christmas tree lights outside the window, but we still get a few bird hits. Don't want to put up an artificial owl or snake because we do like to watch birds at feeder, about 20 feet out in the yard. Thank you- Mark SW Wis.

I don't have bird problems here - but I watch a neighbor's house - it's a seasonal residence. He's lost four picture windows - one every year from a grouse flying into it. Last year - a grouse broke both windows - storm sash on the outside and also the inside glass and landed on the living room floor. Blood all over the rug - and the pipes froze in the house.

We finally put up a metal screen - spaced 6" off the outside window. It's been hit at least once so far - no broken window and no dead bird on the ground. So, either the bird survived - or a coyote took it away. I don't know what else to do - short of leaving the window open?

Hey, I just had a brain-storm. How about I send you a photo of my ex-wife to hang on the window. That ought to stop anything in its tracks.

Yes major Bummer. Also a bummer for the birds. I knew you contributors would have some answers & :) Yes, maybe could try Christmas tree lights or a lamp inside the house right by the window. Thank you all!

When you figure that one out let me know . As for two years now i have this nutty Robin that keeps flying into the one window in the kitchen from sun up till sun down . I have tryed everyting i can think of short of just shooting him , tryed hanging things in front of the window he just goes around and slams into the window . Tryed chasing him away that lasts for 10 min. So when somebody comes up with a fool proof way let me know.

We have birds hit our front window so often that the cats figured it out and whenever we hear a boink, they run to the door and start meowing to go out...in a hurry!

our highschool was 6 buildings all joined with glass corridors. There were black flying hawk sihlouettes stuck up randomly. I still see that on big windows now and then.

Guess it works.

I could send you a picture of my EX and you wouldn't have a living creature in the County...........

My neighbor hangs a netting about 3 feet out from his picture window. Needs it only a few weeks per year. Barely noticeable from the road.

It seems when you have overcast skies, their reflection is more visible, have had the same problem 2 years in a row with birds doing this, as well as those that slam right into the glass on occasion.

I had a female cardinal slam into the garage door window once, was laying on the ground in shock, by right she should have been D.O.A. was cold in Dec. etc.

Both eyes blood red, shock from the impact not to mention she was fading quickly it seemed. Brought her inside, the heat was a good thing, took awhile but being out of the cold immediately gave her an edge, had I not been standing there when it happened.

Once she was feeling better, she started eating sunflower seeds, so I kept her fed and provided water, made a perch for her. She flew once in the garage, landed, I went over and offered my finger as perch and she climbed on, she would not leave, so I kept her until the one day I took her outside and she finally flew away, have that on video too.

One very grateful and really cool bird to handle:

Picked a very dead rose-breasted grosbeak up off the deck tonight. Must have hit while we were all at work. Our windows are opposite each other and I thought they thought they could fly right through. Had a phoebe trapped in the garage when I left the door open. Finally caught it and set it free.

Hang a caution sign, or one of them signs that has a bird on it surrounded by a red circle with a line through it. They'll spread the word from flock to flock and quit coming around.

Better not let PETA find out, they'll make you take your house down.

We had a hen turkey slam into a window at work one day. Didn't break the window, but it was pretty amazing to watch. Stupid birds.

On a somewhat related note, I saw a hen pheasant commit suicide by flying into a barbed wire fence once. It smacked it's head on the fence, then did kind of a loop-d-loop around the fence. Another amazing sight.
