OT AVG vs Norton 360

I currently have Norton 360 installed on my desktop. It seems to be a huge power hog, runs slow and is always performing some background scan or something. I was told by a friend to uninstall it and go with AVG.

Does anyone have any experience with AVG, or any other good antivirus software??

I have the free version and I like it. Doen't seem to interfer with anything. Takes a couple min. to fire up but after that you won't even know its there. My provider recommended it._Bill

Computer techs were I work say Norton isn"t worth the cd is copied on. I have used AVG. It worked fine on my newer computer, but older one couldn"t seem to handle it - bogged down. Check with your dsl supplier. If I remember correctly, when we changed to sbc, they included anti-virus through the router.

I installed Norton 360 once. And uninstalled it ten minutes later. It was WAY overkill for the average home PC.

Norton was very good until about 2003 or so. Then it became a power hungry bloated thing. Get rid of it.

AVG is good.

I like Avast! a little better - free version seems to update easier, etc.

Just updated to AVG 8.0 from the 7.0 and I like 'em both. Do their thing and stay outa the way. Can't beat the price, either.

I use AVG and it seems to work as advertised, but I am getting messages that the "free" version is going to stop getting updates and I actually have to pay for something now. Anybody know the scoop on that?

Kirk

I will check it out. BTW I have not looked recently, but what do you get with the paid version? Is it worth looking at spending the cash?

TIA,

I've got them both. Put 360 on one PC, and son of a ..... to try and use that PC. Yes, can setup what runs in back ground, and defrag does by default, so can turn it off, but I ended up taking it off. I just couldn't take it anymore because the PC that I put it on was running a Pentium 2 and even though I told it to stop defrag, it was constantly combing through programs and just bogging it down to the speed of frozen mud. I should've reloaded Norton Anti-Virus 2000, and brought it up to date. At least it was useable, but like a nitwit, I figured buy the latest and greatest since was reloading XP on it...and that 360 will set in that box off to the side until I figure its been paid for long enough, and then into the trash. It comes fully locked down, assuming that you're a 2 year old kid that needs to be protected from everything but breathing, so won't do anything but breath. If I wanted to screw with it over hours, I guess I could set it up, but I'm not screwing with 360. Enough was enough.

I've got AVG Internet Security 7.5 on this laptop, because an IT guy told me that he uses the free version of AVG on some applications because works fine, and advances for it are financed by those that purchase AVG software. The problem with the free version is that you get zero tech support, so I went out and bought 7.5. That can be a pain too, especially when first trying to go online because it assumes that everytime try to go online, your PC is left on, and someone's trying to use or hack your system that shouldn't be. It can be dealt with though. And of course, don't try to load any software with anti-virus, anti-malware, or anything running. It aint going to happen.

And as far as McAfee... I don't know why or how they're still in business. Good luck, and make sure if you change from 360 to AVG, clean all of 360 off the PC first. Nothing like having one on a PC and then trying to load another. I made that mistake years back when had free McAfee on a PC and loaded Norton Anti-virus 2000. Took me forever to stop the boot process at the right spot so that wouldn't continue and be a train wreck during the boot process that left my PC locked up tighter than a welded shut safe.

Learn from my mistake. Never add another anti-virus or anti-spy software onto a PC that has one on it. Those two guys will assume that the other is spyware or a virus and try to kill each other, in the meantime your processor will stop dead in its tracks. Is a nightmare to try to stop the bootup process in the right spot so can remove one or the other.

And be careful before purchase your AVG. There's a difference between 7.5 and 8.0. The 7.5 will run from Win98 and 486 processor, but I think the 8.0 needs either Vista or a minimum or like a Pentium 4 processor. There was a reason that I didn't buy 8.0, and I'm running XP, Pentium 4, 512MB ram, and a 250 gig hard drive, and I didn't buy it for some reason, but forget what and why. In any event, before you buy, read the box and be sure that your PC will support it. Your computer must be compatible.

I use AVG. I liked 7.5, but 8.0 takes twice as long to scan. I'm up from 2 hours to almost 5!

Norton would take 8 hours on this machine. It took 4 hours when this PC was new. Dammmmmmmm slow. And norton is built around IE, and often has something go wrong. And uninstalling it on vista wipes out your Volume Shadow Copy service, which destroys your System Restore.

But AVG is free for personal use and gets updated every day, so unless you don't like its looks or the update on startup, by all means, use it!

Yes I had one. 1973 850 camando. What a sweet bike. Bought it brand new. Had a few problems but nothing major. The twin cylinder engine was mounted with rubber to absorb vibrations. Sitting at a stop lite it would shake so bad it would blur your vision but you get it on the road and it would smooth rite out. It never had that numbing vibration that the Jap bikes had. Wonder if they still make them?

The free 7.5 AVG was set to expire 5/31.My computer savvy daughter uninstalled it and installed a free version of Avast last week. The only difference I've noticed is the spooky voice announcing that Avast has been updated.

My home pc is 8 years old and the local computer guy put avg on it almost 2 years ago. It does seem to scan quicker I had McCfee. I got my laptop 3 weeks ago with out any anti-software and downloaded AVG right away.

I used Norton for years, and quit it as others have said.
I've used AVG 7.0 or 7.5 free for several years with good results. Then the message came through to upgrade to 8.0. I was able to finally find the 8.0 Free by scrolling down, etc. Then my troubles began. The 8.0 installation screens said that it would remove the 7.5, which it did, I guess. Then the 8.0 would not install completely leaving me with no anti virus. I eventually went back a week to a Restore point (Win xp). I still have partial use of the 7.5, cannot uninstall it to instal 8.0. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I dumped norton last year and went to avg. upgraded to avg 8.0 without problems. the newbies.ws website has a good link on their website. If you are dumping one antivirus to switch to another then you need to download the new program, unhook from the intertnet, remove the old antivirus and then install the new antivirus, go back online and update the new program.
