Allis CA + V Rake = Practical?

Got another brain-buster for you guys.

We will be raking a couple hundred acres of hay this summer with an IH 706 Diesel and a Vermeer 8 wheel V rake(4 wheels on each side.) My thought is that that 706 uses a lot of fuel for a very light job. We also have 3 Allis Chalmers CA tractors sitting in the weeds not being used. None of them run, but I think two of them could be brought back fairly easily. The two both have decent tires and hydraulic pumps for rear lifts. The hydraulics would have to be re-plumbed into remotes to fold up the rake. Would the pump handle that? Wouldn't be live, but that's no big deal. I guess my question is, would it be worth it to make one of the CA's pull the rake and sip on gas instead of the 706D? Thanks for any insights.

I think it would work. I have a neighbor who's rake tractor broke down on him during haying, so he pulled the rake with an ATV. Other than it was a pain to fold up, it worked.

Only problem I can see if the front of a CA is pretty light so you may have to add some weight to it if there 3 point types that is. Yes a CA should be able to hanlde them unless your going up some big hills. And yes you need to use only as many HP as needed with the price if fuel like it is

I've pulled the same rake with an M and an 856, and I didn't do any scientific tests, but I don't think the 856 used much more fuel if any than the M. A diesel on a light load is pretty easy on fuel. Lee

Nope, think you are wastin' yer time.

The diesel in that 706 is one of the cheapest running engines ever built. Under total full load, you can't run 2 gallon an hour thru it even if by court order.

Just don't think that there is ANY four pop gasser that can compare to it. Especially on a hay rake.

Just my opinion,

Allan

Keep using the 706 diesel... a diesel engine is very efficient under a light load. Shift up to 2nd in high range and throttle back. Your 706 will provide a much smoother ride as well.

We plan on raking with our 1086 this year instead of the 544, a diesel just above idle vs. a gas at full throttle will be cheaper to run, even with diesel fuel costing more than gas. Plus the cab and AC will be welcome!

When I pull my 8 wheel V-rake with a tractor I use my CA, it does a great job, is quite, and uses hardly any gas, I just put a little canopy on it to shade the sun. I have one single remote coming out out out of the floor board. I can also lift my rakes by hand if I want.

If it were me I'd go ahead and get the CA's running. Then I'd go out and rake with the 706. It won't burn much fuel at half throttle, rides nice (very high priority to me) and has a great ground speed selection.

Alrighty guys, we'll stay with the 706. I really like Kruss1's answer, though!! Thanks for the opinions and have a great day.

I think you be suprised how little fuel you will use raking with 706. I checked running an ford 8000 (100 HP) raking ( 10 wheel rake) and used about 1.8 gallon an hour. This was just smaller field 28 acres and not a great test, but I was pleased with what I found on fuel usage.
I am going to try to keep track of each task this year and see what fuel I am using.
But a backup tractor is great to have if you can get the AC going
