i got a rebuildable 700r4 tranny from my 83 chevy. cottman transmission will only give $25 for it. does anyone know what i should have for a asking price if i put it on craigslist
 
IIRC, the unlees it has had MAJOR updates, an '83 700R4 is old enough NOT to be desired for rebuilding. I would THINK $50 to $75 would be TOP price.

The later trannys were MUCH improved.
 
I'm not sure how much they changed the 700R4, but in the early '80's the big thing was to replace them with TH350's when they failed. There were even adapters made to compensate for the extra length.

To answer your question, $25 sounds about right for a core charge on one. If you know it's history and it's healthy, you may get somewhat more.
 
The below posts are right. If I remember right, it was about 87 or so when they finally got the 700r4's optimized. Every place I've read about 'em they say to look for the 87+ ones to rebuild.

That 25 bucks would be about right for a core price from a tranny shop. For all they know, the only useable parts in it are the case and the pan. Tranny shop I used to work in stripped out th350's all the time(since that was by far our biggest seller along with the Ford Taurus FWD transaxles), and threw away many of the parts inside lots of 'em due to wear.
But go ahead and put it on craigslist anyway for 50 or 75 bucks...ya never know! Might be someone out there that can use it, and as they always say, any particular item is worth exactly what someone else is willing to pay for it.
 
What transmission do I need to stick in a 1988 w/ 305? Do these get into computerize when you get too new? What other items for upgrade from 3 to 4 speed?

You'll want a box from at least a '91 or '92 3/4 ton (heavier clutches).

The only computerized function on an '88 is the converter lockup control.

1986 and newer 700R4s had all the major updates and improvements. No computer or vacuum needed - it's TV cable controlled. Any trans from a V8 will be rugged enough inside - but a trans from a diesel will have a differerent governor.
 
Sorry to kick the dust here, but that just simply is not right.

His truck is an '88.

Therefore, EITHER the computer has to be used to lock the converter OR the wiring inside the transmission has to be re-wired to accomidate an external vacumm conrolled switch. A 4L60 without a locked converter is just about worthless.

Additionally, that throttle valve on those old transmissions were nothing less than a pure enjoyment to behold. Unstick about a million of those japers and you'll get my meaning.

The '86 thru '90 transmissions were the "formative years". GM didn't get it right until the 1991 model and by 1993 that transmission went electric.

Well, guess I'll kick some of my own dust. I didn't want to get into a long detailed chronology of the 700R4 - but . . .

Up to 1985 the trans had some severe weak spots and updating requires major hardware. Late 85 it was greatly improved.

Mid 1988 model-year - a few more refinements added that enhanced it, and in the next few years a few more - all pretty much minor.

Speaking in general terms - late 85 and up was pretty relable - but at this time much of this is moot. I'll assume most transmissions from the 80s that are still out there have probably been rebuilt at least once and upgraded. Lockup converters are the same from 1982 to 1995 as long as 30 spline and NOT the early 27 spline - or a few rare 6 lug diesel converters.
For the most part - for any trans that has rebuilt/upgraded properly, 85 to 91 are pretty much the same in regard to durability.

In regard to transmission controls - lockup control is easy added with - either some homemade wiring or some cheap aftermarket kits.
 
You say rebuildable so it sounds like it NEEDS rebuilt which make it worth scrap price ! Haul it in for scrap or better yet get the $25.00 which is likely more than scrap.
