Calcium Carbide....

I have two 5 gallon canisters of powdered calcium carbide that was once used in a carbide cutting torch. The torch is no longer used. What is the best and safest way to dispose of this stuff with no cost to do it?

Thanks Dan

You could put it in 1 pound containers and sell it on ebay. You could even set up your own website and sell it there. Goes for around 13 dollars a pound. Cavers/reenactors/independent folk still use it.

Just be sure to keep it dry. Course you already know that cause you lived this long! LOL

Hope this helps,

Aaron

Hello Dan

Is your carbide a dark grey/blackish color of chunks about the size of pea gravel or shelled corn? If not and it is a dirty, grainy white colored dust it has already deteriorated and is not much good but could still generate a little highly flammable gasses if mixed with water.
Disposal could be as simple as spreading it thinly along your driveway or over any open ground you may have.
Service rifle and pistol competitors still use it in carbide lamps to blacken their sights. If it is still good you could contact your local rifle and pistol club to see if they want it. Ten pounds of the good stuff would last a big team for years. Good luck with it Don

Be careful. A buddy of mine has a large skylight in his shop. This is where his carbide welder went through, and he put the skylight in instead of fixing the roof.

As someone else mentioned, find a weld shop that still uses it. The local shop that has been owned by the same family for seveal generations still use the stuff. At the quanity they use is is enough cheaper to justify the hassle.
