I spent the day working on a NH 55 hay rake. Pulled it out of a fence line a year or so ago. I had to make a new drive shaft for it, replace the cable that is there to take it out of gear. I also had to make a new spring for the wheel dog. Now I do still need to replace a number of teeth but it should be a good one I hope

Good show! I still like a bar rake better'n those new fangled wheel things! I got one that goes on the 3pt hitch, pto powered. Use it on a wfe Farmall 200. Can lift it and carry around when needed. Does wonderful wide turns on the windrows. Easy to follow with the baler. Just a dandy raking machine.

hi old i just got a nh 256 rake is there a spring in the small gearbox that puts it in and out of gear when i pull on the rope. i have to walk back and manually move the little arm to engage it.but i can disengage it with thr rope because it pulls toward me. it doesnt have any spring motion to it i assume it is supposed to be spring loaded maybe thought you would probably know thanks RICK

Can not say for sure but I would almost bet there is. I know on this 55 when you throw the lever back to engage it, it pops right back so there almost has to be a spring of some sort in it

if the gear box is full of grease, it may be just too thick for it to engage. You could put a spring on the outside pulling backward . then when you disengage it tie the cable to keep it from snapping back.

just a thought to get you threw till you have a look inside.
