Bit of a Fordson Model N theme today, this one is another Hybrid, a Fordson Model N fitted with a Junkers type, vertically opposed, diesel engine, (two pistons in each bore) built by a French company. This one is owned by a friend on mine.
Fordson Junkers

Interesting. I didn't know Junkers built anything other than aircraft. And I didn't realize anyone ever built a production, two crankshaft engine(other than experimental). This monstrosity type of engine was certainly way too heavy to ever make it in an airplane.

Lots of vertically opposed engines were made, Fairbanks Morse for one made a large range of them. Most were used in marine applications. Also used in rail applications, look up Napier Deltic for another take on the concept.

BRM P75 Formula 1 engine 3 liter from middle 60's . Plagued with retirements but it did win a race in the hands of Jim Clark.

Ariel Square 4 had 2 crankshafts also. I remember one from the 50's, Had a different sound from what I was used to..

Commer trucks here in the UK used a Tilling and Stevens, horizontally opposed, three cylinder diesel two stroke with a single crankshaft, with rockers, for many years. It also had a Rootes blower, super charger, and, when under load, would vibrate buildings many yards away. I have stood in the car showroom, near a set of traffic lights on a small incline, and seen the plate glass windows shake, when one pulled away from a stop, when loaded.

You mean a 'flat' engine, like an aircraft engine? Horizontally opposed, four, six, and even eight cylinder engines. How, or why would they make a three cylinder??

OK, a little research explains it. But I'd have to see a picture of it to understand how they could put two pistons, opposed, in one cylinder, and run one crankshaft!

Here's the pioneer, Gobran Brillie. I was about 14 yrs old when I became.
fascinated with this car.
