Choir stalls and Altar in Ely Cathedral

Cathedrals intrigue me, they are so amazingly large and yet built and finished mostly by hand. Who paid for them all? Our little church is closing probably the oldest in our community, I think we will try to set up some kind of foundation to keep it sound, the building is in every picture of our town from the beginning.

I think most of the great cathedrals took centuries to build and complete. Even St. John's The Divine in New York city is still not finished. Imagine the slow progress made with no cranes, cement pumps, manlifts, etc. It is amazing that they could be imagined, financed and constructed a millennium ago!

I've read that Cathedrals of their day were like space programs of the day. How wide and how high? Interesting to consider the contexts, atmosphere, social structure and economy, as well as what ever war was going on within 3-400 miles.
