Amazing video

I just finished watching that video before I came back here and saw your post. That's a coincidence. Neat video to watch and an incredible locomotive. What is even more amazing is all that was designed and built back then without any computer.

That is amamazing. And then some of the dummies that designed steam engines used what they learned to design a computer.

It is an impressive machine. Even more so up close. AMAZING to consider when it was built. If you are ever in Denver, stop into the Forney Museum of Transportation. They have everything from horse drawn stuff, to bicycles to cars to trains to airplanes.

This video is on their web sight.

I have to admit, when we went there one day, I was not at all impressed when we pulled into the parking lot. Walking around outside before they opened I thought it was going to be another one of those tourist traps where you pay your money, see a few things, then leave thinking about how many more productive ways you could have spent your time. NOT at all the situation with this place!

Take your good walking shoes and plan on a whole day!!!
BigBoy Locomotive

The Animagraffs website animates a number of other complex machines besides the Big Boy steam locomotive: jet airliner; WW2 submarine; P-51 fighter plane; Formula 1 race car; sailing war ship; etc. A good channel to keep an eye on.

Wm. W. Kratville was a photographer and historian for Union Pacific Railroad. He authored a number of railroad books including:
Big Boy;
The Challenger Locomotives;
and The Mighty 800
where he writes about the development, design, manufacturing, usage, modifications and phase out of those UP locomotives. They are good reads, now mostly found on ebay.
