Get on the stick

Do any of you remember the phrase ''Get on the stick''? My mother used to use it in various forms like: ''You better get on the stick or I'm gonna get on the stick''. It meant to get things done or to get busy. She grew up in eastern NC. It must have been a term from there because I've never heard it other than from her when I was growing up. I'm curious about how wide spread it may have been.

Likely a reference to control sticks in early aviation. Akin to Balls to the wall and The whole nine yards.
Possibly a reference to early automobile shifting but not a Model T.

We used it in northern NH. Google says that it refers to getting your car going using the gear shift stick.

Have heard it a few times around here. More common was "Get it in gear" or get yer' rear in gear"...

Commonly heard growing up, southeast NYS. Generally meant get to work.

I remember hearing it some in my younger days.

Always knew it meant get busy or get serious with whatever I was supposed to be doing.

I don't know where it came from, but I envisioned it was referring to possibly a broom stick, or maybe even a hockey stick.
